The easiest approach will be to keep an array of the states the user has visited, and then when the user clicks the back button, simply jump to the previous element in the array.
I'm afraid I'm a complete newbie and don't even know what an array is! If you have time to explain a bit more or can point me towards a tutorial somewhere I'd be really grateful,

If you listen for the StateChangeEvent, you can access the newState and oldState properties. Seems like you would want to push the oldState into the array each time. If they click your button, you can then set the currentState to the last element if the array. Something like:
