    Blank screen upon opening

I just installed Adobe Premiere Elements 9, which I bought from my campus computer store. My installation seemed to go well, and the organizer operates just fine, however, when I open APE, it asks me if I want to start a new project (to which I say yes), and then promptly gives me nothing but a blank, gray, screen with the menu bar at the top. All icons except those in the help section and new project, exit are greyed out. If I try to start a new project from File->New, I get a dialogue box that says "Sorry, a serious error has occurred that requires Adobe Premiere Elements to shut down. We will attempt to save your current project."

I'm not very good with computers at all, so if I'm missing drivers and such, I would have no idea. However, I have been using a trial copy of Sony Vegas Pro 10, and everything is working just fine on that.

My operating system is: Dell, Inspiron 560S, Processor: Pentium(R) Dual-Core CPU E5700 @3.00 GHz 3.00 GHz, with 3.00 GB RAM, 64-bit.

Thank you all for your time!
