1. Re: Can you open InDesign CS files into CS5?
Scott Falkner Apr 13, 2011 9:48 PM (in response to Talyianna)Yes. You can install the 30-day demo and try it yourself. You will not be able to save files edited or created in InDesign CS5 so that InDesign CS can read them. So upgrade everyone or be very careful about who works on what files.

2. Re: Can you open InDesign CS files into CS5?
Talyianna Apr 13, 2011 9:55 PM (in response to Scott Falkner)Thank you!! That is wonderful news!! I have CS5 and thought that it would indeed be possible but wanted to make sure:) Once they make the switch they will not have to open newer files on older versions.... I just want to make sure that they can open all current files in the new version.
One more question...I have some very old ID files on my system and they opened perfectly into CS5 (which I personally have). Is there any way tho' to tell WHAT version those files were created in?
Thank you for your help:)

John Hawkinson Apr 13, 2011 9:59 PM (in response to Talyianna)Hold down Command (or Control) and go to About InDesign...; Check out Document History in the lower left corner of the window that pops up.

Talyianna Apr 13, 2011 10:09 PM (in response to John Hawkinson)WOW! That is WONDERFUL...I just learned something new! That is a wonderful trick that I can really put to good use:)
It is showing that the document was created in app version 2.0.1 (FS InDesign Roman) build 559 in Sep. 2002.
Do you have any idea what version of InDesign that was? It may very well be CS if CS5 is version 7.
Thank you again:)

5. Re: Can you open InDesign CS files into CS5?
John Hawkinson Apr 13, 2011 10:17 PM (in response to Talyianna)CS5 is version 7, therefore CS (i.e. CS1) is version 3. version 2.0.1 is InDesign 2.0.1 (not CS2). The 2.0.1 update was released in May, 2002, according to http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/product.jsp?product=31&platform=Macintosh.

6. Re: Can you open InDesign CS files into CS5?
Scott Falkner Apr 13, 2011 10:18 PM (in response to Talyianna)Add two to the Creative Suite number to get InDesign version number. CS = CS1 = InDesign 3. That file is from InDesign 2, which predates the Creative Suite numbering.

10. Re: Can you open InDesign CS files into CS5?
P Spier Apr 14, 2011 6:44 AM (in response to Talyianna)And one more bit of advice (two actually). NEVER overwrite the earlier version of a file you convert (you just never know and you can't go back if you've overwritten the original), and rather than open the .indd file directly in CS5 I recommend exporting to InDesign Interchange (.inx) from CS, then open that in CS5.
There are going to be text reflow issues with converted files, and using .inx will force them all to happen as soon as the file is opened rather than waiting until you click in a story, and more important, there are reports of problems that crop up on occasion with converted legacy files, usually after a significant amount of editing has been done, and opeing the .inx seems to prevent these. I've not seen reports of problems with converted CS files, but that may just be becasue very few users are making that big a leap at this point, and a little caution never hurts.

I can't find the InDesign CS5 trial. Were all Adobe product trials pulled because of their new month-to-month product subscription service? Or are the trials just on a hiatus until CS5.5 is out?

John Hawkinson Apr 14, 2011 8:31 AM (in response to charles badland)Did you try https://www.adobe.com/cfusion/tdrc/index.cfm?ref=sup&product=indesign?
Anyhow, if it fails, it should be the latter, or something else busted; Creative Suite Trial Versions says:
CS5.5 trials
Creative Suite 5.5 product trials will be available for download soon. Be notified when they are available.
CS5 trials for suites
Trials of CS5 products are still available for download, below.
