# How can I do a countdown without using Effects > Text > Numbers?

I know how to do a countdown using Effects > Text > Numbers, but that has a limit of "30,000" as the number.

I need to count down from 6,500,000,000.

Any ideas how to pull that off (and include comma separation)?

I was going to try out this tutorial but it has the same 30000 number limit.

I don't see why you think that the general expression method that Colin shows has a limitation of 30,000. Colin's example shows in general how to create a counter.

From the first paragraph of the tutorial:

"First of all, you numbers can not go any higher than 30000, or any lower than -30000"

Maybe I misunderstood that, though....

That's the limitation of the Numbers effect that Colin's method is meant to work around.

It's not a limitation of Colin's method.  That is, in fact, the whole point of what Colin wrote.

You probably did, but not in the strict technical sense. This problem is a general limitation in how AE deals with 16bit double precision integer values that affects all effects/ value controls (see here for another such case). Where you are missing the obvious, is that you don't acknowledge that for the visual result it doesn't matter how the numbers are generated mathematically, meaning that nothing stops you from using multiple such effects and stringing them together to create the illusion. People have been doing this for years. As an alternative, try using text layers and expressions as explained here.

Thanks Mylenium. That Motionscript.com expression was spot on.
