1. Re: Newbie - access an element?
Noel Carboni Apr 22, 2011 8:53 AM (in response to quality11)One quick possibility is to choose Window - Info and (using the little menu button at the upper right of the INFO panel) set it to display the numbers you need, then hover the cursor over the various elements to get a reading of the color.

Curt Y Apr 22, 2011 8:57 AM (in response to quality11)Photoshop does have a steep learning curve, but there are tons of books and tutorials on the subject. For the basics any version past CS2 is OK.
There are lots of tutorials on the Adobe site as well as UTube. Lyndya.com is the best, but it is a paid service. If you use this pick a month where you can devote a lot of time to the tutorials.
The Adobe Classroom in a Book is good for the beginner to intermediate user, comes with lessons and disk with projects.
Good luck, and I am sure we will see you back here.

quality11 Apr 22, 2011 9:03 AM (in response to Noel Carboni)Thanks for the info suggestion! Ah.....it gives me the RGB and CMYK in %s. That's helpful. It would be great if it gave web color.
Thanks for the tutorial and learning suggestions, Curt Y!

4. Re: Newbie - access an element?
Noel Carboni Apr 22, 2011 9:13 AM (in response to quality11)RGB are in decimal, I think. But I understand it's not a direct reading of what you need.
Try this:
1. Click the foreground color swatch in the Tools panel.
2. Sample the color you want to look at. I believe THAT dialog does read out a hex triplet.
3. Cancel the dialog when you're done.

7. Re: Newbie - access an element?
Bill Hunt Apr 22, 2011 3:49 PM (in response to quality11)If it is a font that you have on your system, then the Eyedropper should give it to you in the Character Palette, at least it does in InDesign. If not, just Dbl-click on the T in the Text Layer's header, and it should select that Layer, plus the Text in it - look in the Character Palette.
If it's a font that you do not have, you should have gotten an error, when you Opened the Image.
Good luck,
Hunt
[Edit] If you got the error message, do not do a Save, but instead a Save_As, then see this THREAD.

8. Re: Newbie - access an element?
quality11 Apr 25, 2011 6:31 AM (in response to Bill Hunt)Thanks. Just saw your reply. When I open the Character Palette > Window > Character, I see fonts and sizes, and when I click a T, I get a cross hair but not an eye dropper and it doesn't show the correct info so I know I must not be "choosing" the font with the cross hair.

quality11 Apr 25, 2011 6:41 AM (in response to quality11)It would be great if I could just get in there.....I need to just copy the text so I can paste it into DW. Thank you!

10. Re: Newbie - access an element?
Noel Carboni Apr 25, 2011 10:45 AM (in response to quality11)Make your text layer current in the LAYERS panel, then select the Horizontal Type Tool (T), and hover over the text until the cursor changes to an insertion point without the little box around it, then click. That should allow you to edit / copy the text.
This assumes that the text has not been rasterized. In that case it would be just pixels and there's not much you can do to edit it further, other than to recreate it using new text.

quality11 May 7, 2011 4:07 AM (in response to Noel Carboni)Thanks Noel!
Is there a way to change the size of a shape in a layered file? For example, I need to change the size of this image in the layered file -- it's a drop down menu -- but I have no idea how to make it wider and longer. Thanks so much!!

13. Re: Newbie - access an element?
Noel Carboni May 7, 2011 3:26 PM (in response to quality11)I can't get to that image, but this might help:
Select the layer with the shape you want to resize, then try using the Edit - Transform functions (e.g., Edit - Free Transform or Control-T).

quality11 May 7, 2011 7:22 PM (in response to Noel Carboni)Thanks Noel. Got that and then I'm not sure how to click on the shape to make it wider and longer. I try to double click, right click, etc but nothing.
The image I posted above doesn't come through for you?
