1. Re: Do not have permissions to ... install pixel bender from extension manager
unique_screenname_here Apr 25, 2011 10:26 PM (in response to cidrmakr2)What command returned "command not recognized?" Did you try "fixing permissions" via Apple's Disk Utility? The problem you're encountering is almost certainly a permissions issue. Did you verify directory ownership, in addition to the read/write level, of directories such as "Application Support?"

2. Re: Do not have permissions to ... install pixel bender from extension manager
cidrmakr2 Apr 26, 2011 6:48 AM (in response to unique_screenname_here)Yes, I ran disc utility to repair permissions. Bear in mind that the utility ONLY repairs permissions on apple apps and system files (per adobe support). It does not repair permissions on adobe files. I examined the contents of the extension manager app to try and determine which folders / files it was writing to and was not able to discover where or what. I also added the terms to extension manager to obtain a log in users/me/library/application support/adobe/extension manager to try and determine where the error was occuring; but the file is so long and so many failures that I was not able to discover where the problem is. And, again, I have opened the info for every file / folder that I can imagine extension manager writes to to make certain that I have read / write permission but something is missing somewhere. What I need is a list of the folders / files that extension manager writes to in order to install the pixel bender plug in. (I have not attempted to install any other "extensions" but assume if it won't work with this one it won't work with any of them. ) I only have photoshop cs5 with bridge and acr, and the adobe files that go with it. Is that possible for you to do?

unique_screenname_here Apr 26, 2011 2:48 PM (in response to cidrmakr2)"Repair Permissions" is a bit like the proverbial canary in the coal mine; I'm always going to ask that you run it when encountering potential permissions issues. I was going to suggest that you create an Extension Manager log as described in this thread, http://forums.adobe.com/message/3259413#3259413, but it sounds like you've already done that. Please send me the log via private mail and I will take a look at it. We may need to rope the Extension Manager guys in if I can't discover the problem. I'm guessing you reproduced the Extension Manager problem you are seeing when generating the log, if not please do so. Thanks.

4. Re: Do not have permissions to ... install pixel bender from extension manager
cidrmakr2 Apr 26, 2011 3:09 PM (in response to unique_screenname_here)Thanks for your help. Yes I created the .YES file in teh mac section of the extension manager app as mentioned in a previous forum entry. The log file from users...... extension manager is attached. I double clicked on the pixel bender mxp file that I downloaded to start extension manager. It started, asked for acceptance of the terms, clicked yes, then the screen shot of "You don't have permission to perform..... ", click OK, then it seems to actually run and install the extension but it doesn't show up anywhere.
I ran update from bridge after I reloaded the entire ps and extension manager was one of the apps updated. Also, don't know if it's relevant or not, but I purchased CS3, 3 years ago, updated to cs4, then to cs5. Over time and going to the new computer cs3 and cs4 were both deleted in entirety. I run in 64 bit and use the nik color efex pro complete; several topaz filters; and imaginomic portraiture; all of which run without problems. There are a couple of pixel bender filters that I started using to create unusual backgrounds so I am really trying to get it to work.
Thanks again,
John L Perdue

cidrmakr2 May 4, 2011 9:33 AM (in response to unique_screenname_here)OK, I replied over a week ago with the log file attached. Haven't heard back. Did you get it? Or, did you forget me?
Can you get me a list of the files extension manager writes to to install pixel bender for cs5 on mac 10.6.7?
Thanks, John

6. Re: Do not have permissions to ... install pixel bender from extension manager
unique_screenname_here May 4, 2011 2:56 PM (in response to cidrmakr2)No, I did not receive the log or even a private mail. Please send me the log via private mail or post it here as a thread attachment. I'll review the log when I get a chance. I do not have a list of the paths that Extension Manager requires for correct operation. You can try asking on the Extension Manager forum; one of the Extension Manager engineers may be able to help. Please remember that most of us do this in our spare time. Your patience is much appreciated. Tech support is the best route for urgent issues.

7. Re: Do not have permissions to ... install pixel bender from extension manager
cidrmakr2 May 4, 2011 4:11 PM (in response to unique_screenname_here)OK.... I was under the impression that the forums were the place to have a dialogue with tech support people. Adobe is such a complicated business that folks like me have no idea which place to look for help when something goes wrong nor whom to ask. I do appreciate your time attempting to figure out the problem here.
I have to wonder exactly why an adobe installation program has to verify permissions in folders in order to run.
When I answered initially with the log, the dialogue ended up on the forum along with my full name, but the log was not attached. Since you received the email this morning I'll assume you will receive this. So the log is attached. It is the file that the machine creates that is not text but is viewed in an apple console program.
Again, thanks for your help.

unique_screenname_here May 4, 2011 8:50 PM (in response to cidrmakr2)John, I'm receiving thread notifications not your emails. You need to select "Private Messages" from the "Your Stuff" menu in the forum and send me mail from there. There's a "Compose Message" link within the private message interface. It's easiest if you copy my screenname from the thread and paste it into the To field.

9. Re: Do not have permissions to ... install pixel bender from extension manager
cidrmakr2 May 5, 2011 12:56 PM (in response to unique_screenname_here)I contacted apple support, signed out as "me", signed in to the computer as the root user. Then opened extension manager, clicked install, found the pixel bender mxp file that I downloaded, and installed it - this time without problems. logged out as root user. logged in as me. opened bridge, a raw file, photoshop. Pixel bender was there and worked as it should.
This problem must be unique to the mac and extension manager.
To the forum people, thank you very much for your help.

10. Re: Do not have permissions to ... install pixel bender from extension manager
unique_screenname_here May 5, 2011 2:21 PM (in response to cidrmakr2)I'm glad to hear it's working. You should definitely not need to login as root in order to get things working. I took a look at the log and nothing stood out to me. Happy filtering.

Larry Lato May 7, 2011 7:16 AM (in response to cidrmakr2)I'm having the identical issue on a Windows 7 machine. Very strange, I am the only user and Admin, I've done all kinds of updates and plug-ins before, but I get the same issue in Adobe Extension Manager. However, even though I get the "I don't have permission" statement, it seems to run the update regardless, then when I bring up PS, the filter is not there. Larry Lato

12. Re: Do not have permissions to ... install pixel bender from extension manager
cidrmakr2 May 7, 2011 7:59 AM (in response to Larry Lato)There is a note on the pixel bender download page that states for windows you have to right click on the extension manager application, in it's own folder, and select "run as administrator" for it to work.
