Can't print from Adobe Photoshop CS5

    montysM Community Member

I updated and installed the Adobe CS5 suite a while ago (win XP), but have not tryed printing from Photoshop until recently. When I choose "Print" a window pops up stating

"There was an error opening your printer. Printer functions will not be available until you have selected a printer and reopened any documents."

If I close that window and try to "Print" again, "Print" is greyed out.

If I close the document and reopen it, same thing. In fact no matter what format, .jpg or .psd (or whatever) I choose to print, gives me that window stating

"There was an error opening your printer. Printer functions will not be available until you have selected a printer and reopened any documents."

So I can't print anything from Adobe Photoshop CS5... I can however  print from other CS5 programs like InDesign. I mention this so that I  don't get the rote "update your drivers" response. Because if it were the drivers, than other CS5 programs would give me the same inability to print as Photoshop does.

I've researched this problem but I haven't found a solution. I've tried the other stock solution: delete/reset preferences.

I've done that, deleted the prefs.psp. Rebooted. That hasn't helped. I am still unable to print from Photoshop CS5.

Needless to say this has been a huge waste of time for something that  should just work... and has in previous Adobe CS incarnations... If  anyone has a solution or idea I would be grateful.  And if there are  other folks with the same problem it will provide a place to find an  answer should they be googling for one...  for as far as I can tell, there is no solution for this problem out there.

      Thanks, Stefan

Go into windows XP control panel and then printers (I think it is called printers and faxes or something like that as I don't have XP). change the default printer to something else other then the printer you want to print from. Save and close. Re-open PS CS5 and try again by selecting the printer in PS CS5.

            thanks dec9 -

            that works.

a simple solution, though I'm not sure how or why it works...

Couldn't have Adobe engineered Photoshop CS5 to simply detect the printer like every other program does? Instead of wasting my time?

People give Adobe considerable amounts of money for these programs... eh, too often it just feels like they're all pocket and no ears.

            so on that note...

thanks again for your quick response. much appreciated.
