1. Re: Image Captions Not Working When Anchored
P Spier Apr 29, 2011 8:11 AM (in response to RichardM0701)I don't use the Caption features, so this is a guess, but preusmably they caption is in a text frame that is automatically generated, and you cannot add more objects to an anchored object. You need to generate the caption, group with the image, then anchor the group.

2. Re: Image Captions Not Working When Anchored
Steve Werner Apr 29, 2011 8:13 AM (in response to P Spier)Peter is correct. The image caption feature only works with free-floating graphics, not with anchored objects.

3. Re: Image Captions Not Working When Anchored
RichardM0701 Apr 29, 2011 8:39 AM (in response to Steve Werner)Thank you Peter and Steve. It seams like a feature that was highly anticipated and talked about seams to be missing some functionality. I do a lot of translation with the documents we author and we replace these images/illustrations quite a bit and was hoping that the live caption function would save us some time as we switch the images out.
Thank you for your time!

4. Re: Image Captions Not Working When Anchored
RichardM0701 Apr 29, 2011 8:44 AM (in response to Steve Werner)Quick question, my assumption is that the only way to insert an inline image is to anchor it (so it moves with the text)? is this correct? Is there a way to keep it free-floating but inline? If there is, then it would allow for captions.

BobLevine Apr 29, 2011 8:51 AM (in response to RichardM0701)By definition it can't be free floating AND inline.

6. Re: Image Captions Not Working When Anchored
Steve Werner Apr 29, 2011 8:58 AM (in response to RichardM0701)Yes, free floating and inline/anchored are opposites.
BTW, one of the best new features of InDesign CS5.5 is the ease with which you can anchor graphics with drag and drop. Extremely handy when you're producing eBooks where it works best with anchored graphics.

7. Re: Image Captions Not Working When Anchored
kimberfo45 May 6, 2011 3:42 PM (in response to P Spier)This worked perfectly for me too but one new "gotcha" ... when I did this with an grouped anchored image and caption at the bottom of a threaded text frame, it sat over what was alredy there. I expected it to pop up to the next page but it didn't. Applied Text Wrap as well as offsets and still no jump. What am I forgetting??
CS5 here.
Thanks so much!

kimberfo45 May 9, 2011 3:00 PM (in response to P Spier)Hey Peter,
In trying to recreate this for my student, it worked as I'd expected so I'll have to look more into what he's doing that's making it not work!
Thanks for your willingness to help. You are always an excellent resource and trouble-shooter!
Thanks,

11. Re: Image Captions Not Working When Anchored
kimberfo45 May 11, 2011 10:21 AM (in response to P Spier)Ok, I have the students actual content and image (grouped with a caption). I grouped, copy/pasted, then anchored, reset the anchor (in Story Editor), set the Text Wrap and Offsets and it is not jumping, as expected, to the top of the next page.
In this screen shot, you can barely see it, but there is text (and another image) underneath this new anchored group. In other words, the text wrapping and offset are not being "obeyed."
Thoughts?
Thanks much!

BobLevine May 11, 2011 10:31 AM (in response to kimberfo45)Where's the anchor? Text wrap doesn't work before the anchor, only after.

13. Re: Image Captions Not Working When Anchored
kimberfo45 May 11, 2011 10:50 AM (in response to RichardM0701)Hi Bob,
It's at the end of the previous caption (paragraph). BTW, I set the Anchor Position to Custom because there will be many edits and of course we want the grouped image/caption to flow with the text, as changes are made.
Here's a shot before anchored image is positioned in the text frame. We want the image/caption (to the left) to fall right after "tunnel" and above "Figure *****." In other words, he has several image/captions (figures) in a row.
What I was expecting was the grouped and anchored image (to the left) to jump up to the next page, top of column and, after applying text wrap and offsets, the "Figure ****." copy would flow UNDER it. That is not happening.
Thank you for your help!

15. Re: Image Captions Not Working When Anchored
kimberfo45 May 11, 2011 11:01 AM (in response to BobLevine)No it does not in that screen capture. It does in the screen capture above, though. I apply text wrap after positioning the anchored object in the text frame.

16. Re: Image Captions Not Working When Anchored
P Spier May 11, 2011 11:13 AM (in response to kimberfo45)Text wrap applied to an achored object would not, I think, push another anchored object, only the text holding the anchor if that text appears after the anchor for the first object. Could that be what you are seeing?

17. Re: Image Captions Not Working When Anchored
kimberfo45 May 11, 2011 11:38 AM (in response to P Spier)I just added some placeholder text, with a regular paragraph style and anchored the object at the end of that new 'graph (and before the next "Figure" text). Then I went through the anchoring and placing steps again, applied a text wrap to object and still it does not jump to the top of the next column.

19. Re: Image Captions Not Working When Anchored
kimberfo45 May 11, 2011 12:47 PM (in response to BobLevine)Do you mean so you can look at it more closely (in indd format)?
If so, it would have to be with conditions as this is a book that's going to be published and the author is very security-conscious.
Let me know what you had in mind.
Thank you,
Kimberlee

pedronow Nov 9, 2014 2:14 AM (in response to markuslochmann)Update November 2014: Still NOT fixed (InDesign CC2014.1). Why do I get the option for Caption Setup on an anchored image but no option to add either live or static caption? It doesn't make sense and is very confusing.
I should really be possible to anchor an object and then add a caption to it.
