1. Re: Can I have 5.5 and 5 master collection running side by side?
BobLevine May 3, 2011 12:46 PM (in response to RGracia)Yes, you can have multiple versions of the suite installed side by side.

2. Re: Can I have 5.5 and 5 master collection running side by side?
Dave Merchant May 4, 2011 12:32 AM (in response to RGracia)EXCEPT for Acrobat, yes. All other apps in CS5.5 MC will install in their own folders and can co-exist with CS5.
Acrobat X Pro cannot co-install with Acrobat 9 Pro, so you will have to decide which you want to keep.

3. Re: Can I have 5.5 and 5 master collection running side by side?
Steve Werner May 4, 2011 6:06 AM (in response to Dave Merchant)Dave,
I have to honorably disagree about Acrobat Pro ON THE MACINTOSH. I work with and print from both Acrobat 9 Pro and Acrobat X Pro on two Macs without problems.
I know that that's impossible in Windows.

4. Re: Can I have 5.5 and 5 master collection running side by side?
BobLevine May 4, 2011 6:10 AM (in response to Steve Werner)On Windows the installer will look for earlier versions and uninstall them before installing the new one by default, but I was under the impression that Steve pointed out...this is a Windows restriction.

5. Re: Can I have 5.5 and 5 master collection running side by side?
Steve Werner May 4, 2011 6:38 AM (in response to BobLevine)As as trainer and consultant, I have to be able to train people who are using different versions of applications. In fact, on one Mac, I have Acrobat 8 Professional, Acrobat 9 Pro, and Acrobat X Pro, all living together happily! On the same computer (with a large hard drive), I have Design Premium for CS3, CS4, CS5 and now CS5.5.

6. Re: Can I have 5.5 and 5 master collection running side by side?
Dov Isaacs May 4, 2011 9:52 AM (in response to Steve Werner)Adobe does not recommend such parallel installations of Acrobat on a single system and will not support users who have such installations.

7. Re: Can I have 5.5 and 5 master collection running side by side?
Steve Werner May 4, 2011 12:51 PM (in response to Dov Isaacs)Sorry, Dov, I know that's the official line, but the truth is that it works.
The other truth is that we provide much better tech support on these forums than Adobe usually does so I'm not missing anything. ;-)

8. Re: Can I have 5.5 and 5 master collection running side by side?
Dov Isaacs May 4, 2011 12:57 PM (in response to Steve Werner)I will certainly not dispute your second point but we certainly see quite a few users who get into real trouble via the parallel product installations. What can be done doesn't necessarily mean that it is prudent or recommended. And that is why it is not only the official line, but what we ourselves practice.

9. Re: Can I have 5.5 and 5 master collection running side by side?
Steve Werner May 4, 2011 1:14 PM (in response to Dov Isaacs)Dov,
Yes, if you absolutely wanted to be the safest, you would only install one version. But, in the real world, we sometimes need to do what we need to do.
And my experience, as a user of Acrobat software from the beginning though many versions, is that it's very rare to have a problem.
Best wishes,
Steve

10. Re: Can I have 5.5 and 5 master collection running side by side?
Dov Isaacs May 4, 2011 1:19 PM (in response to Steve Werner)Steve,
We recommend VMs for testing versions in parallel.
And we do recommend the safest practices; it's hard enough to support those much less risky practices.
And also, I would hardly classify you as a typical end user of any Adobe product!

11. Re: Can I have 5.5 and 5 master collection running side by side?
RGracia May 4, 2011 1:22 PM (in response to RGracia)Thanks all for the very useful answers. I am now happily running both the Trial of CS5.5 Master Collection alongside my CS5. I should point out that Actobat X was not part of the trial doanload and nor was Encore. As a safety measure I installed them in an alternative location than where the other licensed CS5 apps are. I am planning however to clean and completely remove both before installing my preordered Master which arrives later this week.

12. Re: Can I have 5.5 and 5 master collection running side by side?
BobLevine May 4, 2011 1:58 PM (in response to RGracia)You don't need to do much of anything except plug in the serial number. The trial will become a full working version.

Game, set and match to Mr. Isaacs! :-)
