    Template has locked document title

    beachnut2
      If I select Modify/Page Properties I can key in a Title in the Title/Encoding section and press OK or APPLY but Dreamweaver choses to ignore whatever I type and the document title from the template remains there. I'm using Dreamweaver 8.0.2. Any idea's?

          Try this. Create a new page. Save it as a template with FILE | Save As
          Template. Look at the code. Make the title tag of your template look like
          the title tag of this one.

            Show me the entire page, please. That error usually means that there are
            errors on the page, unrelated to the editable regions.

              Thanks Murray -- already found the problem. When I turned my existing HTML page into a template, DW didn't add in the <!-- InstanceBegin template="/Templates/BasicPage.dwt" codeOutsideHTMLIsLocked="false" --> and <!-- InstanceEnd -->. I created a new blank template and copied all of the content into it. Seems to be better now :)

                This can only mean that you didn't create that template properly. How did
                you do it?

                  Drew PCR Level 1
                  Well, I just tried it again and the problem's back. I made a fresh template by saving an existing page as a template and marking off editable regions... when I change the title tag and try to save it tells me I hit something uneditable. It seems that if I edit anything at all in the code view, it tells me I've jacked with something I shouldn't have and wipes my edits. If I use the WYSIWYG editing tools, it's less likely to blow up on me, but I'm doing stuff with the HTML that's far easier and more reliable in the code view. Maybe DW is designed under the assumption that people using templates don't know how to hand-code HTML? It's very frustrating.

                  Here's the template I'm working with... maybe you can tell me what I'm missing?

                    Try removing the links to the CSS from the template page, and see if that
                    removes the error message.

                      Yeah, that seems to have improved the situation. I was able to edit all I wanted to. So now what? Should I move the styles inside of the editable area or something?

                        The error that is triggering the ALERT is in your CSS. Now we need to take
                        a look at this....

                          Well, I tried moving the styles inside of an editable area, and I tried removing just the conditional comments, and I added in the missing type="text/css" attributes, but none of that seems to have helped. It's definitely related to the style tags, but I'm not sure what to do to get around them...

                          thanks so much for helping me pin this down!

                              Put this code around your <title> tag in your template file.

                              <!-- InstanceBeginEditable name="doctitle" -->
                              <title>AMBS - About Us</title>
                              <!-- InstanceEndEditable -->

                              You should be able to change the title now.

                                Thanks Jim, but my template already has those tags around the title. It's not just the title... as long as the CSS is linked in there, I can't use the Code View to edit the document at all.

                                    OMG - all that CSS? Sheesh.

                                    Try this. Add them back one at a time to narrow down which stylesheet has
                                    the hiccup in it. Can you?

                                        OK - now you have to start cutting that file in half and embedding the other
                                        half to see which one throws the error.

                                          As a somewhat unrelated note: For template documents I find it preferable to control the page title as a template parameter, particularly if you want the title to appear in more than one place on the page, such as in the <title> tag, and in a textual heading on the page.

                                              My titles are much more robust than that. I usually try to think of several
                                              search phrases and include keywords from them in a longer title. I wouldn't
                                              want to do that on a page's content.

                                                Okay, after much cutting of stuff out of the CSS, I've discovered the culprit.

                                                My current stylesheet consists only of the following...

                                                #sublogos li {
                                                margin-left: -3px;
                                                display: inline;
                                                }

                                                With this stylesheet linked to the template, DW8 refuses to let me edit templated pages in the code view at all. As soon as I change the 'display' property to anything else... block, inline-table, etc. I'm able to use the template.

                                                I tried making a test template that consisted only of the UL that the noted style applies to, but it doesn't have a problem when I use it like that. It appears to be some combination of the template itself and that particular style that is making DW think I'm coloring outside the lines. I just don't have a clue what it might be...

                                                  Why do you need it at all? Why not FLOAT those elements instead - which is
                                                  a more traditional way of making a horizontal list?

                                                    Well, replacing the display: inline items with float: left seems to have fixed the problem, although it will require me to do a little more adjustment of the page I guess. It's obviously a DW bug of some sort though. At least I know what it is now.

                                                    Is there a form somewhere through which I can report the issue to Adobe? Their support area only lists how to get paid support... I'm not paying them to tell them I found a bug ;)

                                                    Thanks again!

                                                        That would seem to be the case. As long as there is a "display: inline" anywhere in the CSS being applied to the page, the template cannot be used with Code view. As soon as I remove the 'display: inlines', the program lets me edit the page.

                                                        I've also discovered that DW does not update paths for conditional comments when creating a page from a template. If you have this in your template:

                                                        <!--[if IE]>
                                                        <link rel="stylesheet" href="../mstweb-ie7.css" type="text/css" />
                                                        <![endif]-->

                                                        When you create a new page in the main directory, it doesn't remove the ../ from the path.
