    db to linear volume conversion?

    Applied CD Level 1
I need to simulate the effect of two different types of sound insulating material. We’ve been told that if the source is 90db, material 1 will reduce the sound to 51db (-39db) while material two will reduce the sound to 39db (-51db). I need to convert the logarithmic db scale to Director’s linear 0 to 255 scale. I know amplification on the user’s end will make the absolute volumes unpredictable however I’m hoping there is a formula we can use to at least simulate relative volume reduction. I know we could probably just use a sound editing program and listen for an approximate match but these specs are constantly changing, it would be nice to just plug the latest numbers in and have the volume adjustments made automatically.
