I have just checked - in PrE8 audio in this clip after inserting into timeline works perfectly well.

What CODEC is INSIDE that file? http://forums.adobe.com/thread/440037?tstart=0
Report back with the codec details of your file, use the programs below

Once you know exactly what it is you are editing, report back with that information... and your project setting, and if there is a red line above the video in the timeline, which indicates a mismatch between video and project
This is a single clip with audio imported from the camera as AVCHD video (.m2ts). PrE9 projects settings are: PAL-AVCHD_HD_1080i25; 38kHs audio.
Are both PrE 8 & 9 on the same computer?
Are the Audio & Audio Hardware settings the same in both programs?
Some camcorders shoot AVCHD with stereo sound while others shoot it with 5.1 audio.
Whichever yours is shooting in, you must ensure that project settings match it.
Also go to Windows Update and manually download even the non-critical updates. There are often updates for hardware and audio included with these.
