Anthony Freeman 99 May 14, 2011 11:12 AM (in response to Harm Millaard)Hi Harm,
Thanks
Do you know what the approximate operating temperature range should be for a 990x cpu run at with the supplied cooling fan without overclocking?
Regards

Harm Millaard May 14, 2011 11:24 AM (in response to Anthony Freeman 99)My guess is around the mid 30's C when idle and up to the high 50's or low 60's under load, maybe even lower.

Anthony Freeman 99 May 14, 2011 11:30 AM (in response to Harm Millaard)Thanks Harm,
Someone told me about a programme called prime 95, that stresses the components. I see that its not on your list of favourites, Would you recommend using it to test the components before paying for the Machine please?

Harm Millaard May 14, 2011 11:38 AM (in response to Anthony Freeman 99)Anthony,
I have posted a bit here and there over the span of more than two years, so I admit there is some tidying up to do and updating several articles, but I haven't got around to that yet. I'm busy preparing a new website for PPBM-Next.
If you look here: Adobe Forums: Overclocking the i7, a beginners guide then you will find Prime95 mentioned explicitly. If you do not overclock, there is no real need for Prime95 and specifically the torture test, but if you really want to see if your cooling is adequate, it is a great test and I heartily recommend it.

7. Re: Operating temp of 990x and diagnostic tools?
Harm Millaard May 14, 2011 11:49 AM (in response to Anthony Freeman 99)If you do run the Prime95 torture test and let it run for several hours, do not be surprised when the 990X at stock speed with the stock cooler goes into the high 70's or maybe even in the low 80's C. That torture test is a real torture for any system. A multi-hour export to H.264-BR is taxing, but not nearly as much as Prime95. If your temps go over 85 C, I would quit the test and improve your cooling first.

I just realised that I really might have messed up with my order for components. I really wanted to have my Ram configured in triple channel but only just learned that you need to have at least 3 ram chips for that. I ordered 2 x 12 Gb ram chips of Corsair Dominator ME-C4G3G20F9X3 CMT12GX3M3A2000C9 domGt c9+Fan . I really hope that this is a recoverable error as I have paid 50% deposit on the entire system and am going in on Monday to build it.
Will this make a significant differrence to the performance of my build?
the rest of my build is as follows:
CASE Coolermaster HAF-X PSU Coolermaster 1000w Silent power pro gold Motherboard Asus Intel X58 Rampage III EX CPU Cpu 990x core i7 3.46 ghz 12mb cache RAM 24 GB of ME-C4G3G20F9X3 CMT12GX3M3A2000C9 domGt c9+Fan Corsair Dominator GT Graphics Card Palit GTX-580/ 3Gvram HDD 1 x HDD210 Western Digital 600GB Velociratpor for OS 8 x 1 T Seagate 32Mb cache hard drives (RAID 5) 7200rpm @R463 each Operating System Windows 7 Professional 64Bit Blue Ray Drive 12 Speed Liteon blue Ray writer RAID CARD RS2 BL080 (big Laurel 8) thank you Anthony

Harm Millaard May 14, 2011 1:45 PM (in response to Anthony Freeman 99)ANthony,
No need to worry. You ordered 24 GB memory, which means 2 tri-kits of 12 GB each and each kit consisting of 3 x 4 GB sticks. You will have six sticks total for triple-channel operation.

How does one know that each kit consists of 3 sticks. Is it in the model number that you can tell?

12. Re: Operating temp of 990x and diagnostic tools?
Harm Millaard May 14, 2011 10:10 PM (in response to Anthony Freeman 99)Anthony,
If you need to install the memory yourself, do take care that the three sticks from the first kit are inserted in bank A and the three sticks from the second kit in bank B. Put it another way, if you look at the mobo, there are six slots. Let's call them 1 - 2 - 3 - 4 - 5 - 6. Numbers 1, 3 and 5 are bank A and 2, 4 and 6 are bank B. Avoid mixing the kits in a different way. Bank A and B are electrically separated and it is best not to mix modules from different kits in the same bank.
Just thought I mention that explicitly, because a lot of people have a tendency to work from left to right or right to left and overlook this.

If you can, please can you try to assist with my post on the 16MB cache vs 32MB cache HDD in the hardware formum posted today.

14. Re: Operating temp of 990x and diagnostic tools?
Darren Hall May 16, 2011 2:25 AM (in response to Anthony Freeman 99)Hi Anthony,
on the MOBO you have, the ram slots should be two colors RED for bank "A" and BLACK for bank "B" or visa versa so use one RAM kit for the red slots and one kit for the black slots.
On that set up use one of the cooling fans that came with the kits it will cover all of the slots, (keep the other as spare)
regards
Darren
