2. Re: Transcode 1080p vs 1080i
tplowe56 May 16, 2011 7:55 AM (in response to JSS1138)Ok...that helps. Let me provide more detail & more questions. I am authoring 2 Blu-ray discs, editing done in PP CS5, dynamically linked to Encore.
Disc 1 mixes Flip footage (720p @ 29.97) with SD footage the has been deinterlaced>> exported & is uprezzed with Boris Uprez to 720p in the sequence, to match the Flip footage.
Disc 2 mixes Flip footage with footage from a Panasonic TCM-300 (AVCHD - with .MTS file extension, 1080i @ 29.97)
All clips are on sequences in PPro that match their respective properties. The lower rez sequences are nested in the higher rez sequences.
I have "built" both Encore projects to .iso files and then subsequently burned both to disc with Imgburn, and the results are great. I just want to be sure I am using the optimum sttings in Encore when I output. It looks like I have 2 choices: I can go to: File>>Project settings>>Basic>>Default transcode settings>> Blu-ray>> and set to 40 Mbps, (the highest) and then use the "Automatic" setting in the Properties panel for each respective sequence. Basically set Encore output to auto pilot.
or
I can go to the properties panel for each respective sequence and set custom settings using the "Blu-ray Transcode:" drop down. Using this method I'm guessing Encore will use the highest bit rate possible to fit my disc. But I have a lot of choices:
- 1920x10809p 23.976 Maximum Quality MPEG-2
- 1920x10809i 29.97 Maximum Quality MPEG-2
- Automatic: 1920x10809 23.976p Maximum Quality MPEG-2
- Automatic: 1920x10809 24p Maximum Quality MPEG-2
- Or as I stated above, straight "Automatic"
or
I also have the option to go to: File>>Edit Quality Presets and further create my own customized presets, changing the Bitrate encoding to VBR, 2 pass, etc. I have experience with these settings from authoring many DVDs, but if I just leave everything on "Automatic" and I have plenty of space on my media will Encore adopt the highest quality settings possible?
or am I way off base on all of this because the Flip and AVCHD video don't need to be re-transcoded from their native format at all??
Sorry in advance for this very long winded question.....editing footage & authoring discs is a hobby, not my avocation.
Which method will lead to the best result for playing on a set top box?

3. Re: Transcode 1080p vs 1080i
JSS1138 May 16, 2011 9:24 AM (in response to tplowe56)If you're not a professional, then I'd just stick to the Automatic setting. Anything that needs to be transcoded will be done at the highest bitrate that still allows the material to fit on the disk. Anything that doesn't need transcoding won't be.
On a side note, hobby and avocation are the same thing. Vocation (whout the a) is your profession, meaning you're getting paid.

Thanks for the help.

5. Re: Transcode 1080p vs 1080i
traveler6666 Aug 5, 2012 12:05 PM (in response to tplowe56)Hi,
when using Encore I found out, the project settings are more or less useless as long as the imported sequences settings comply with the BluRay format. This results in an outcome where 1080p 50 fps will be converted into 1080i25 which is a disadvantage. The question now are:
If my sequence settings in Premiere are already set to 1080i25, will this result already in a loss or will this be compensated in Encore if I manually use a progressive format for this sequence?
If I manually chose one of the preset formats in Encore, which are all not have the maximum render quality enabled, will this result in rendering where this not activated even if the sequence in Premiere has activated this flag?
Thanks

6. Re: Transcode 1080p vs 1080i
JSS1138 Aug 5, 2012 3:38 PM (in response to traveler6666)The Blu-ray format does not allow 1080p/50. It'll have to end up as 1080i/25 at some point.

traveler6666 Aug 6, 2012 3:46 AM (in response to JSS1138)Thanks for the answer. This is the reason why I wanted to change to another format (720p/50) instead and ended up with the above questions.

8. Re: Transcode 1080p vs 1080i
JSS1138 Aug 6, 2012 9:13 AM (in response to traveler6666)I'm just not a fan of Dynamic Link for Encore, so I recommend editing in a sequence that matches your footage, and then exporting using an "H.264 Blu-ray" preset, tweaked as desired.
