Choose a printer. If you have not created a printer you will need to make one.
Mac: System Preferences >> Print & Fax >> (Click the +)
Win 7: My computer >> Devices & Printers >> Add a printer

I can print fine, it's saving a document I'm having a problem with.

even after trashing the prefs and restarting
Did you delete the preferences with Illy closed? Otherwise, it does not work.
The next step may be to Move the folder

Thanks for the link. Tried moving the folder but that didn't work, but another hint on that site made me look at apps that interacted with Illustrator. Tried turning off FontExplorer plug-in for Illustrator and it now works.

Then that might be A corrupt font or font cache or a permissions issue for either the font data base or the folder that Font Explorer is using or something of that nature
