    FlashBuilder 4.0 Fails To Start

We recently upgraded our web server from a dual-core 2GB system to a quad-core 4GB system.  After installing FlashBuilder 4.0, any attempts to start it fail.

is the machine that FB is installed on windows server 2008 ? if I could have gotten FB to install on a server class machine a lot of pain would have gone away a few months ago with FB 4 crashing all the time and needing reinstalls. I would have just shoved it up on Amazon EC2 (which I recommend you all look at) and spun off a virtual machine from an image if it ever crashed. EC2 only supports servers, not client OS's

Just by curosity, why are you installing Flash Buidler (an IDE for developper) on a server machine?

            • 3. Re: FlashBuilder 4.0 Fails To Start
              Level 2

if you are asking me and not the poster then yeah yeah yeah. i do a lot of work inside of Visual Studio and Sql Server MGT studio. They install fine inside of a server environment. Amazon EC2 only supports servers. but hey you are deploying the stuff on a server anyway. If it crashes there is zero down time in reconfig. msft reconfigs take about 2 hrs each for VS and SQL if you are lucky.

so once FB started crashing i thought hey maybe FB would install up there with Java. Nada for me at least. It would not run.

I reinstalled FB4 at least 5 times on my dev box W7.

and you remote desktop to it. it is sitting hundreds of miles away from me and is incredibly snappy. dev from work dev from home dev from anywhere.

It is installed on Server 2008 - BUT, we have it installed on TWO other Window Server 2008 boxes that have 2GB of RAM and dual core processors.

This is the first attempt at installing it on a 4GB quad core box, and it's not working.

We need it installed as we have a development box and a production box, and we have a set of code that we compile on development, and then make changed on production and compile a different set of code on production.

Are you guys implying that it won't run AT ALL on a Server 2008 box?  That's madness.

                • 5. Re: FlashBuilder 4.0 Fails To Start

i am not implying that it won;t i would be delighted if it worked for me. perhaps if there are others like you that have success i will try again if the wrench hits the fan. I use the Amazon cloud for my servers.

i am not sure why you have yours installed on a server based on what i read. i mean it sounds like you have different rollout environments that does not mean the FB needs to be on the server but i can be dense.

my reason was because the environment crashed so much i was getting sick of it and wanted a virtual machine i could wipe my hand from and just re-run a clean instance in case it was some flakey Java thingey. FB 4.5 has been very stable so anyway just my 2 cents.

I'd use FB 4.5 but it's design mode doesn't work with the Flex 4.0 SDK, per this thread: http://forums.adobe.com/thread/850869?tstart=0

Is there any way to resolve this issue and get FB 4.0 to work?

                    • 7. Re: FlashBuilder 4.0 Fails To Start
                      Level 2

ok so i did not read that thread but why are you trying to do that as in use new with old sdk

also why really do you need to have FB running on the server.

you can have hundreds of server environments why does your FB dev need to be there despite my goofy reason ?

                      • 8. Re: FlashBuilder 4.0 Fails To Start
                        SOGC Level 1

Well, we're not ready to migrate to a new SDK yet - when we tried compiling our 4.0 SDK project with the 4.1 SDK, we immediately ran into issues.

Frankly, I'm suprised at how unstable and how many issues FlashBuilder has in general in terms of doing any kind of migrations.

We don't have the funds to have several development and production servers, so we have one development and one production web server - we move development code over to production, make the appropriate modifications, and then compile the production code on the production web server.

So, once again, what do we do?

Are we to believe that while FB 4.0 worked on a Server 2008 machine with 2GB ram dual core, it doesn't work a on a 4GB quad core machine?

Are we also to believe that FB 4.5 doesn't support the Flex 4.0 SDK in design mode?

It seems like any way we turn we're out of options.

                          Level 2

ok so first off get FB off of servers. sounds like you have enough going on. it doesnt take much to make something not work like  a different Java version so get off that.

so let's say you are now on a few dev boxes that are client OS's

why are you wanting to go from 4.0 to 4.1 when you could jump to 4.5 and be done for a year  ?

if the migration is going to take some time then go for the gold or just stay where you are.

i cannot appreciate what you are going thru because i am always using the latest tool and sdk so keep that in mind but i don;t understand this 2 migrations in 1 year thing it is like passing a kidney stone twice

                            SOGC Level 1

We don't have any other boxes to put FB onto.

What I'm hearing is that we can't run FB 4.0 (for some unexplained reason), and that we're being forced to upgrade to FB 4.5 and therefore are also being forced to migrate to a new SDK.

                            • 11. Re: FlashBuilder 4.0 Fails To Start
                              SOGC Level 1

I think that I've just figured out our solution.

We don't need design mode on our production server, and can just export to release build after moving the code from production.

So, we can use FB 4.0 on our development server with design mode, and then FB 4.5 on our production server w/out design mode.

what do you mean you have no client boxes that is too funny !

                                • 13. Re: FlashBuilder 4.0 Fails To Start
                                  SOGC Level 1

Haha well, we use dedicated servers hosted by GoDaddy.  We're a small startup, and don't have any reason to rent more servers than we need.

We technically have 3 servers - one dev box that's a web server and DB box, and a production web server / and one production DB.

Our solution does everything that we need, and now that we have a fix for this FB issue, all is as it should be

Right .. however, we don't have any colocated space to store the server, nor would we want to burden ourselves with a non-hosted solution (for the time being).  We're just barely covering our costs, and not having to worry about the IT side of things saves a LOT of time and resources.

It's $200 or so extra a month for a hosted 2GB dual core box, and given that we can run FB on our production web server, and that it doesn't take up any resources other than disk space (when we don't use it), there's no harm in running it on our production web server.

If there's an alternative solution that meets our needs and is viable from a cost perspective, then we'd absolutely explore it and potentially switch over.

I know that it's not closely linked to the subject, but I still can't understand why on earth you have to compile your application on the server. Is your code depends closely to the server environment.

For example, code in Flex and Java doesn't depends on the server environment as the compilation result is a pseudo code (bytecode) running then inside a virtual machine.

For my part, I'm developping (java server part and flex ui) everything on my dev box (mac), compile it and then just copy the compiled file (swf and jars) to the production servers (linux).
