    Dreaweaver only saves as template

    Level 7
      Folks:

I'm using Dreamweaver 8. Today, it's refusing to save files as anything
      but a template.

When I try to save (File > Save or Ctrl+S), the save as template dialog
opens up. If I choose Files > Save As, I can save the files on top of
themselves, but that's a real pain in the neck.

Does anyone have a fix for this?

as a guess, there is an html comment in the code that is template syntax.
do a find for <!-- and scan all the comments.

The file was built from a template, so there are template-syntax HTML
comments. Why would that force me to save the file as a template?

How did you make this file?

did you open the template.dwt file, and do a "Save As" file.html?
              don't do that.

the way to make a child page of a template-
              File-->New
In new file dialog box, click Templates.
              Click thissite
              click thetemplatefileyouwant
check in lower right corner "update file when template changes"

then save the new file to within the site folder.

That makes a child of a template.

Just like you said. I used File > New > Templates > Chose the template,
                then saved the file.

                    Kevin:

Alan is correct. The only thing that would make DW think that you need to
save a page as a template would be if the page had template markup in it.

Look in the code and see if you can find <!-- TemplateBegin anywhere. If
you can, then that page has been improperly created from a template.

Thanks for that tip, Murray. I wish I'd known to look for that
particular tag amongst the other Template tags. By the time I saw your
message, I had already deleted the problem file and recreated it without
problems. I don't know if I'll ever get used to Dreamweaver, but I need
to build a Contribute-compatible site for work, so I'm soldiering on.
