    Making subclips in CS5

I've got a co-worker who's doing an edit in CS5 and has his audio recorded separately from his video (video is Canon XHA1, audio went to a Zoom H4). He's got his clips synced in the timeline, but he wants to be able to make subclips out of them (not sure why...once they're on the timeline you really don't need subclips). However, with audio and video from different sources, the context menu's Make Subclip option is grayed out. Are there any ways to make a subclip with synced audio/video from separate sources?

Not knowing any way, my workaround would be to sync everything up in one timeline and then just use snippets of that timeline embedded in another where needed, but I'm guessing that's not going to work for him. BTW, he's coming from an FCP background, and is barely familiar with PrPro...
