    InDesign 5.5 and page numbers

    nils _ Level 1

Under Type/Special Character/Marker there are options like:

      Current Page Number

      Next Page Number

      Previous Page Number

But no matter what I select, I allways get Current Page Number in output.

What is the trick to get a Next Page Number or Previous Page Number?

The functions are misleadingly named and do not do what you think they do.

See Add automatic page numbers for story jumps which states:

Next Page Number Inserts the number of the page containing the story’s next frame. Use this character when creating a “continued on” jump line.

Previous Page Number Inserts the number of the page containing the story’s previous frame. Use this character when creating a “continued from” jump line.

That is, both are for use with "jumps," when a set of threaded textframes jumps between pages. And the "next page number" will show you the page number that the current frame jumps to, based on its next thread.

They do not give you n+1 or n-1 of the current page number. Use a cross-reference, hyperlink, or text variable for that.
