InDesign Hangs when right clicking on graphic

    photiosd

I have a problem that whenever I try to right click on any graphic in any document, even a brand new document, I don't get the contextual menu, but a spinning beach ball. I'm using InDesign 7.04 OS X 10.6.7. I have tried trashing my preferences, and getting rid of the SING folder per Adobe's instructions, and still I get the same problem. Also, I have installed CS5 from scratch, to no avail.

I'm sorry about this long post, as I'm going to include the Sample Process from Activity monitor, just in case it makes sense to someone here. If anyone has any suggestions, I would really appreciate the help!

      Thank you!

      Photios

Next time, please upload the call graph to pastebin.com, rather than posting it here. It makes navigating the forums difficult, and sometimes pasting long lines messes them up.

There should have been a section at the end of the Sample Process output called "Binary Images" that starts like this:

          Binary Images:
              0x1000 -     0x4ff7 +com.adobe.InDesign 7.0.4.553 (7040) <495B1B76-6091-6009-EAAD-0F3DDD8D029B> /Applications/Adobe InDesign CS5/Adobe InDesign CS5.app/Contents/MacOS/Adobe InDesign CS5
              0xa000 -     0xafff +InDesignModel ??? (???) <D054C2C9-F070-A1E1-2D78-BACDC9DCC960> /Applications/Adobe InDesign CS5/Adobe InDesign CS5.app/Contents/MacOS/InDesignModel.framework/Versions/A/InDesignModel

Can you post it, too? Again, please use pastebin.com, don't actually post it here.

It would appear your InDesign process is stuck doing some basic string manipulation on a filename. From the call graph of the top thread:

          Call graph:
          2150 Thread_46582   DispatchQueue_1: com.apple.main-thread  (serial)

          1032 std::basic_string<char, std::char_traits<char>, adobe::afl::AFLAllocator<char> >::at(unsigned long) const

So, you can see where it gets the right click down event (RButtonDn) and then it does some mystery stuff until it tries to convert a filename to a file, and then it gets hung up trying to convert it from UTF8 to ASCII. Knowing what all that GetPlugIn and hex stuff was would help, and we can probably only get that from the omitted section. (Err, I guess we're stuck on the GetPlugIns either way since sample(1) gives no way to disambiguate duplicate symbols...that's unfortunate, maybe even a bug; hopefully the hex addresses will give enough information, otherwise you'll need to use some other tool like the Time Profiler inside of Instruments.app, which is a Developer tool...)

            John,

Thanks for responding to my post...

I went and copied a new Sample Process.

Here's the link for it: http://pastebin.com/x5DwQLht

Unfortunately, what you stated regarding the Binary process does not appear at the bottom of the sample. Is there something I'm doing wrong?

Also... I do have the instruments.app. I'm not sure how to use it though...

Thanks so much for your help!

Hmm. I am not sure I'm in a good position to hold your hand on this one... perhaps you should try Adobe Support?

In Instruments, you can find Time Profiler in templates under Mac OS X and then CPU.

Hit Choose Target and select the running InDesign process and hit record.

THen you can stop recording (Since it's stuck doing just one thing anyhow) and then try to see where it is.

You could also try finding InDesign's process number from Activity Monitor and then in the Terminal window,

run "sudo iosnoop -p 12345" where 12345 is the process id. That will show you file activity from InDesign. If  you don't see anything after it is hung, you might need to start the iosnoop before you do the rightclick.

Hopefully somebody else will have a good idea...

Oh, right! You figure it out right after you post!

In Activity Monitor, select InDesign and then View > Send Signal to Process and choose Abort (SIGABRT). You should get a proper crash dialog window and you can upload the full crash from there to pastebin. It'll be very similar to the sample process output (except backwards), but it should include the module information.

This is weird. Well, certainly that has the information I asked for, and that is that the Links module is involved. In retrospect this doesn't seem surprising, since in fact you've got a link.

Is there something weird about the filenames or the file system your links are on? Is it on a network? Is it case-sensitive [special dangerous MacOS option]? Is it made of green cheese? An SSD?

Can you post a screenshot of the Link details from underneath the Links panel of one of these images?

This seems pretty weird, since this is baseline functionality that really should just work...

                      John,

I'm attaching a screenshot of the links info. What's interesting is that I can create a new document, and put a graphic placeholder in the document. At that point, I can right click on it with no problems (the graphic placeholder). However, once I place a graphic in it, and it does not matter where the graphic resides... my desktop, pictures folder, whatever, when I right click on it then... pow - the spinning beach ball!

Do you have this issue on items that aren't jpgs? If you have illustrator try making an AI file with pdf compatibility. If when placed that doesn't cause InDesign to hang that is a good start. If that gives you problems try finding a WMF file and place it. If the WMF file gives you fits right clicking you have something goofed up pretty bad.

My guess is that you have an application that can open jpg that is is coded poorly or old and is trying to be referenced.

When you right click a jpg in the finder in the Open with > dialog does it take a long time to load? How many options do you see there? If that menu doesn't load at all you can try RC Default Apps (free) Rubicode - RCDefaultApp  and see what all can open jpgs.

I'd lay about 26¢ that you have an application that is trying to be a potential app for opening jpg that is causing your issue. Reduce the number of potential apps and you can maybe eliminate the problem. A good idea may be to make a new user account and see if this issue persists.

Since you are on 10.6.7 what you can do is make the new user, copy the entire InDesign CS 5 folder to the desktop of the new application if you have the issue on the newly created user. The log back into your main administrator account and open your Applications folder, hit get info, under Sharing & Permissions unlock it and slap the + symbol, choose the newly created user and choose "No Access" under Privilege. From there you should have no chance of poorly created apps having a file association and you should not have that issue in InDesign.

Hmmmmm..... You have given me something to think about. Unfortunately, I'm at the office right now, and the offending computer is at home. When I get home tonight, I'm going to look into this. The home computer is, exactly that... the home computer that has some very old files dating back to the 90's. Over the years, we just upgrade the computer and keep the files. I have no idea how many old apps could be on that thing that might be referenced to load a jpeg. Maybe some OS 9 stuff even... though, they would not run, but that just shows how much a possibility is that I've got an offending application.

I'm excited to check this out this evening, and will post what I find!

Make sure to exclude other folders if you have Classic residue floating around and potentially if you ever thought it was a good idea to install old Developer's tools. Use same process to preclude just your test user from seeing.

I've seen some similar symptoms with freebies floating in my downloads folder.

Make sure you don't get the right click issue with WMF files first though. Generally you'll find gobs of things will be able to handle jpeg when they use Quicktime for processing. WMF is one of the few placement formats indesign can take that aren't handled by Quicktime.

I fear I will regret this post.

I'm not sure why Macinbytes thinks the problem relates to JPEG file associations, but maybe. You could google for the lsregister invokation to do the OS X equivalent of "rebuild the desktop" which might help.

Here's what I suggest, though. Quit InDesign.

Save the following script on the desktop as checkpath.sh

                              and then open Terminal.app and

                              type sh ~/Desktop/checkpath.sh

                              Script:

                              #!/bin/sh
                              INDESIGN='/Applications/Adobe InDesign CS5/Adobe InDesign CS5.app/Contents/MacOS/Adobe InDesign CS5'
                              cat > /tmp/gdb$$ << EOF
                              set sharedlibrary print-basenames on
                              break main
                              set logging file /tmp/gdblog$$
                              set logging redirect on
                              set logging on
                              run
                              delete 1
                              break *'FileUtils::PosixPathToSysFile(std::string const&)'
                              command
                              set logging off
                              x/s **(int*)(\$esp+8)
                              continue
                              end
                              run
                              EOF

                              gdb -x /tmp/gdb$$ "$INDESIGN"

This will print out a line each time InDesign calls PosixPathToSysFile(), and it will print the name of the file. which is not very often. My InDesign calls it only once on startup and not when I right-click.

Oh yeah. It will be really slow to start. Like it might take 2 minutes before it really starts InDesign. More if you don't have 2GB of RAM free.

Anyhow, then right-click and check the last few lines of output. They should be between doublequotes.

You will also get a *lot* of spurious output that you can and should ignore. Anything like "Reading symbols for shared libraries" or "*** NSAutoreleaseNoPool() ... just leaking" or "warning: Could not find object file" are perfectly normal, as well as boring and uninteresting.

(I bet someone who knows dtrace could have written a dtrace probe that does this waaaay faster. Oh well.)

Also, you should try the iosnoop line I suggested. That might be easier.

I placed a WMF file in a new document and still got the dreaded beach ball!

I'm going to try this on Sunday. I'm tied up all day tomorrow, but will give this a shot and see what it produces. I'll  get back then.

Download 'Snow leopard Cache Cleaner' run it and choose 'Empty ALL caches' (user, system etc.). Restart. Problem gone.

So when I do this, I will get an output file that my help to underline the cause?

                                          Thanks!

You were correct all along!!!!! I tried the WMF file, and the program still hung... However, I decided to go through my applications folder and dump any program that was older than 5 years that would be able to open a jpg. I rebooted.... Problem Solved!!!!!!

What made me really suspect your suggestion was correct was that I left clicked on the graphic, and then I went to the edit menu and went to the menu item "Edit with...". As I moved my mouse to the arrow which was to lead to another menu listing the different editing programs to edit the graphic, the program immediately started to hang. Hah, I thought! That's it!!!!!!!

But this is still an InDesign bug. Unless it's an Apple bug, but it doesn't look like it.
