1. Re: edit PDF results in unwanted font change?
Monika Gause Jun 10, 2011 10:35 AM (in response to avpromedia)No, that's not a bug. You need the font when editing a PDF.

2. Re: edit PDF results in unwanted font change?
avpromedia Jun 10, 2011 2:53 PM (in response to Monika Gause)The font is embedded in the PDF file.
I can understand why a substitute font is use for display while editing inside illustrator. Even the pop up dialog says the font is used for *display*. If the font is substituted for real, it should have said so.
And while in illustrator, when I select the text it shows the font type to be the one I don't have (e.g. "helvetica *") with the asterisk implying to me the font is preserved even though it is displayed using another font.
Because of these two factors, I think it intends to preserve the font type but for some reason changed it at the end. Therefore I think it is a bug.
All it needs to do is to not change the font while saving, and the PDF file would display correctly. Perhaps while saving the file, it incorrectly save the font name of the displayed font instead of the actual font. Simple programming error.
Obviously, if I were creating a PDF file from scratch, I would need the font, but this is not the case.

Monika Gause Jun 10, 2011 3:17 PM (in response to avpromedia)The font is embedded only for printing and for placing in layouts or the like, but NOT for editing. When you're editing a file - be it a PDF or an AI (or an EPS) - you need the font installed on your machine.

Larry G. Schneider Jun 10, 2011 3:35 PM (in response to Monika Gause)And remember Illustrator is not a general purpose PDF editor.
