1. Re: Feathering effect in a pattern
Grant H Jun 18, 2011 10:55 AM (in response to Rodieck)define the repeating pattern
Are you trying to create a New Graphic Style maybe?

[scott] Jun 18, 2011 1:38 PM (in response to Rodieck)Check your settings. It all seems to work as expected here.

Grant H Jun 18, 2011 2:06 PM (in response to Rodieck)have you tried to simply drag the featered object into the swatches pallet?

4. Re: Feathering effect in a pattern
Rodieck Jun 18, 2011 8:12 PM (in response to Grant H)Thanks for your responses. I'm not sure I can answer the questions, though. I'm not trying to create a graphic style but a pattern that I can repeat on fabric. Here's what I'm trying for. The first shows my design in the large navy area which shows the bounding box I'm using to create the pattern. The fireworks show nice soft edges.
But after using Edit >Define pattern and applying the pattern to an area, here's what I get:
This shows sharp lines rather than nice soft glows. (The same think happens whether I use Define pattern or drag the design to the swatches panel)
Hope this explains my problem better. Is there another way to do what I'm trying for, and what settings should I be checking?

5. Re: Feathering effect in a pattern
[scott] Jun 18, 2011 10:27 PM (in response to Rodieck)My guess is that hte feather effect is not scaling with the pattern. I'll have to do some testing to confirm though. If you have CS4 or CS5 you'd be better off just using a radial gradient and reducing the opacity on the exterior stop.

Rodieck Jun 19, 2011 7:53 AM (in response to [scott])Thank you, Scott, I'll try that. And I would appreciate learning whateve you find out from your testing.

7. Re: Feathering effect in a pattern
Rodieck Jun 19, 2011 11:22 AM (in response to [scott])That worked very well, Scott -- thank you. I had tried playing with the gradient and gotten nowhere, but your suggestion of reducing the opacity on the last stop was the magic that I needed.
Scott, I had given you a "helpful answer", but now I'd like to change it to a "correct answer" but I don't know how!

8. Re: Feathering effect in a pattern
[scott] Jun 19, 2011 12:34 PM (in response to Rodieck)I don't think you can change a "helpful" mark to a "correct" mark.
Glad the opacity in the gradient stop worked for you. The raster effects, like feather, can hit bumps occassionally when combining them with styles and patterns or the like.Although, I've been unable to replicate your original issue with the feather effect. Seems to remain in tact for me. So I'm not sure what the issue was.
