not really. just convert your background into a movieclip (say bg) and you can use:

I assumed the code went in the timeline, but it didn't work attached to the mc either.
did you give your background movieclip an instance name of bg or change the code to match your movieclip's instance name?
I named the instance. and nothin'.
did you define speed? if so, post a link to your fla.
oops. I did not define speed. when i did it works fine.
