    XDCAM and Premiere CS5 Mac

    Revolution009

I have an .mov file using the XDCAM xdv8 codec and I'm having trouble opening it in Premiere or Media Encoder. I really just want to compress the file down for web use, but I'm having trouble opening it. I have tried Premiere, Media Encoder and Quicktime and all give the same error, that I do not have the correct codec. VLC is able to play the file, however.

I have read through this thread but unfortunately there was never a solution posted... http://forums.adobe.com/thread/753275?tstart=-1

      Any suggestions?

VLC uses its own internal codecs for playback.  It doesn't use system codecs, and the system can't use its codecs.

From another user, assuming you are on Windows:

That's a Quicktime movie exported using the Sony XDCAM HD codec, most  likely exported from FCP. There are no XDCAM playback components for  QuickTime on Windows--at least, there are none that are available from  Apple. Try downloading the Calibrated XD Decode component (there's a demo version you can try), and see if that doesn't allow you to at least preview the file.

              From the same user:

Download and install WinFF,  which is a converter/transcoder built on the FFMPEG libraries. FFMPEG  seems to be able to ingest just about anything I've thrown at it, and  WinFF has always done a good job of converting bizarro files when the  situation calls for it. You could probably try the "DV" preset, which  will create a raw DV stream.

Title of the thread was "XDCAM and Premiere CS5 Mac" so the above post unfortunately doesn't apply. I do have access to a Windows computer but not with the CS5 suite.

Sorry, my fault.  Calibrated XD Decode has a Mac version.  I shouldn't have limited my comments to Windows.  Plus, you don't need the CS5 suite to run WinFF, so access to a Windows box may work for you after all.
