    proportional resizing graphics

I converted a document with graphics from PMD to INDD. I now need to relink the graphics, which is difficult because InDesign has renamed them as "imageXXXX.tif" (where XXXX is a 4 digit number) even when the originals are not even .tif files. But I can manage that. The trouble is that when I relink the file, the proportions are wrong. In PageMaker I could restore proportionality simply, but have not been able to find how that is done in InDesign.

I am using InDesign CS5.5 under Mac OS X 10.6.7.

I hope I am just overlooking something obvious. How do I do this?
