If you are using Reader 9.4.5 you have the latest. Ignore the request to update or turn off the auto updating. If you are not running 9.4.5, you can try downloading the update from the Adobe website.
Can you provide AdobeARM.log file from User Temp folder? At least last several sections of logging info from this file.
If Updater successfully installed the latest update, you should not see it again.

I can't find that log file for some reason. It's not in my temp folder, and I even tried searching the C drive for it, but nothing came up. Any idea why?
What is your current Reader version?
If it is 9.2.0 or later, the file must be there.
Like I said, it's v. 9.4.5. I'm not sure why that file seems to be missing.
Do you have Adobe Acrobat installed on your system as well. Cause if thats the case, then you may be receiving the second update for Acrobat and not for Reader.
Also, the file AdobeARM.log should be present, in the %temp% folder. Can you please try initiating a simple Help > Check For Updates from within Adobe Reader and see if it gets created.
