Reader X causing earlier versions of Acrobat (elements and pro) to crash?

Several people at work, who have earlier versions of Acrobat including Acrobat Elements 7, Acrobat Pro 8 and Acrobat Pro 9,  have found that the IT department deployed Adobe Reader X to Windows XP computers.

After opening Reader X, they have found that the earlier versions of the "full" Acrobat (Pro, Elements, etc.) no longer work.

I have Acrobat Pro 9, and I use it as the default application to open all PDFs, including e-mail attachments. If Reader X is deployed to my computer, I am inclined not to open it at all, to avoid having it install resources that would conflict with the earlier version of Acrobat Pro (no one is deploying Acrobat Pro X, only the reader). Is this correct if I want to avoid having my Acrobat trashed?
