See Photoshoped AE timeline. I want to do what's displayed (I faked it in PS) on the green arrow line. Turn on and off layers at different times on the same layer?
Maybe I'm dumb and have never discovered this (or even what it's called for that matter). I usually just set key opacity frames from 0 to 100 right next to each other to turn things on and off instead of searching around for the answer. But now I have a project that I need to turn layers on and off lots and lots of times. Around 100 in the projet, so the keyframe idea will drive me mad.
So, can it be done?
No. AE doesn't have compound tracks. You could, however, use effects like Blend or Channel Combiner to blend between differnrt tracks without actualyl splitting them in separate layers....
