FCP XML to Premiere Different Frame Rate

    dwhillans Level 1

      Hello,

I have imported an FCP 7 XML into Premiere 5.04. When my sequence was in FCP it was at a frame rate of 23.976 at 720P. When it came into Premiere, though, it had changed to 59.94 fps at 720P.

I wonder how this has happened and if there is any way to change it back to 23.976 fps? Or should I just leave it as is?

I tried copying all of the clips within the 59.94 fps sequence into a new sequence that was 23.976, but this resulted in partial frame gaps (like a quarter of a frame missing). Sometimes you wouldn't even notice this during playback, but other times you do. So I assume this is not the best way to change it back to 23.976.

      Thank you.

From what camera did the clips originate?

The clips came from a Panasonic HVX-200.

              OK.

And they were definitely shot at 720p/24?  (If yes, is that Native 24?)

I believe it was recorded at 720P 24PN, so yes Native.

This is the raw MOV info. It shows that it is 60P, but that the frame rate is 23.98.

FCP seemed to recognize this automatically, and when I take one of the raw clips in Premiere and create a new sequence it also recognizes the 23.98 fps. But somehow in the XML import it got changed?

I see your clips are MOVs.  That's not normal.  The camera actually records MXF files.  Perhaps FCP messed things up when it converted the media.

I might suggest finishing this one project in FCP, then start new projects in PP using the native media.

Colin B. works a lot with this media, he may have an alternative suggestion.

When imported through FCP, these files were converted to DVCPROHD MOV files from the MXF files, since FCP does not like to work directly with MXF files.

I have a sneaking suspicion that these files are actually 24p-over-60. Premiere is probably doing pulldown removal (24p-over-60 is a 2:3 cadence), which is why they're showing up as 24p. Can you grab MediaInfo and run a report on one of the MOVs in Text Mode, and post the results here?

Premiere is probably doing pulldown removal

It actually looks like it's not doing that, which is why it opened up in a 60p sequence.

I mean pulldown removal on the footage; I suspect that FCP is hiding the actual frame rate in the sequence. PPro is being more literal. The MediaInfo report will tell more (or even seeing what PPro is detecting the clip as).

Sorry. I probably didn't need to include all the audio info.

Thanks David; that looks pretty consistent with what I'm seeing in my test clips.

If you select one of these in your bin, and go to Clip > Modify > Interpret Footage, what is Premiere Pro reporting the frame rate as? Is the Remove 24p DV Pulldown box checked? (It's probably not, but just want to confirm.)

If your sequence in FCP was 24p, I'm guessing that there is something breaking down in the translation, or its just an unfortunate side effect of the nature of DVCPROHD 720p--which really only has 60p and 50p variants. The 24pN, 25pN, and 30pN variants are all sort of afterthoughts once solid state media became viable.

Wondering if it's possible to hack the FCP XML... hmm...

                                  Hi Colin,

You are right. The "Remove 24p DV Pulldown" is NOT checked.

I will probably just have to continue editing at 59.94 or go back to FCP7.

                                  Thanks for your help.

But the clips showed up as 23.976, right?

                                      Hi Colin,

Yes, the clips showed up as 23.976 fps.

As it turns out, I have had more problems now. I started working with the sequence as is now that is in Premiere (I didn't try to change the fps at all) and I was only able to get about 15 minutes into editing before Premiere crashes. And now I can't even continue.

I will report this bug to Premiere.

                                      Thank you for your help.

The FCP -> PPro conversion can be a little flaky. Sometimes, certain elements like FCP's Slug don't translate properly. Other times, there appear to be weird phantom edit points that don't show up visually in the sequence, but they're regarded as such by the software, and that can bomb out. The few times I've had to do FCP XML transfers, I've ended up piecemeal copying parts of the transferred sequence into a fresh sequence, and had no problems. Depending on the length and complexity of your edit, that might not be feasible.

If you can reproduce where the crash/failure occurs, that can help you isolate the borked part of the sequence; sometimes you can find little bits and pieces of stuff there that, once cleared out, will let the sequence worked. Sometimes, you can turn off the video (punch out the eyeballs in the sequence track headers) and you'll be able to get to the problem point without the program crashing.

Sorry it's not going more smoothly!
