Seems like you should listen for change events directly on the text input itself:
<s:TextInput id="searchText" prompt="Search" change="myhandler(event)" />
Yes, but the isssue is referring to the text input field from outside the headerRenderer because the handler is not in the renderer but in class containing the datagrid.
can you dispatch a custom event from the itemrenderer
Dispatching events, custom or built, is easy to do, but what do I attach the listener to? The datagrid, the gridcolumn? In both cases, attaching the event listener to them didn't work. What am I missing here? The handler for the event is not in the headerRenderer class, it's in the class that contains datagrid of the headerRenderer.

can you bubble the event? they are all visual elements so you should be able to listen in the outer container
@kokorito: please can you bit a little more specific? Setting the default bubble property to an Event object would be enough? Which outer container do you mean?
