          No, that won't help.
There used to be an option for creating a compressed player in previous
versions, but for some reason it was removed from MX2004. I guess it had to
do with cross platform publishing. No matter what the reason, I couldn't
disagree more with the removal of the option - could have at least been
supported only for the host OS, as it used to be.
If you own director 8.5 or MX and your scripts are compatible with them, you
can select to include all Xtras in the projector, and create a single
compressed file. You can still include the Xtras in mx2004, but the file
          won't be compressed.

In the Files tab of publish, you can still choose to use Shockwave
compression. In the Shockwave tab you can compress both images and audio.
You can also make a Shockwave player if you want. Including all Xtras won't
make the file smaller either, but it will slow down the launch time.

Yes, media can still be compressed. But you can't create a compressed player
anymore. So, you start by aprox +1.5 MB (~2.5 from ~1.1).
As for the shockwave player, do you remember what happened with 8.5 sw
projectors when sw player 10 was released? The movie informed it needed to
install sw 8.5, launched a browser, installed sw10 and then refused to run.
Wouldn't risk going through that again.
