Cursors change at will, Photoshop CS4, Win 7

What is up with these cursors????

I'm working away with different tools; eraser, clone tool, brush, dodge, burn, crop, magnetic outline, etc. For the most part, I'll have a circle on all of them that have such a visual tool (crop and magnetic don't), then I go back to eraser, and suddenly I'm looking at 3 little squares, no circle, so I have no idea what areas I'm affecting. Or I go to brush, and instead of me being able to right click and adjust opacity and hardness, it's suddenly a list thing that says something like:

      3 out 51

      5 out of 51

      7 out of 51

      14 out of 51

      etc.

Why do these things change??? I never told them to change. The only thing I think I might have hit by accident, would be the tab, alt, or shift button, but I hit it again, and there's no change in getting my cursors back to 'normal'.

Same thing with the features at top. I'm working along, able to adjust the opacity of my eraser or whatever at the top, underneath the menu bar, then a bit later, no such adjustments available. For that, I had to click around on the View selections or something, to get those 'normal' features back.

What is up with this stuff????? It's maddening!

Same goes with my "Proof View". It was checked, I altered a few photos, then I find I was editing a few others, and it'd turned itself off. I now need to go back, and redo changes again.
