1. Re: SMP > Official HTML5 Support
Robert Hall Jul 19, 2011 10:36 PM (in response to greg•hamer)Greg, I'd love to see an answer to this as well - was hoping that things might be finalized this Friday seeing as how Adobe is giving a seminar on OSMF.
I am just about done with a OSMF/SMP 1.6 project that leverages HTML5 fallback. I looked at a lot of libraries, Kaltura, VideoJS, and probably a dozen or so more - in the end I took the exploratory stuff the OSMF team put together and modified it to suite my needs, including adding support for true Fullscreen in Safari/Webkit desktop/iOS (popout/resizeable fullscreen for other browsers), AIRPlay support on iOS, volume slider, deferred seeking, loading/buffering indicator, etc. pretty much all the things that are mentioned as not being done in the wiki. The project should launch sometime in the coming weeks, so I'll be happy to share the URL and let you guys can pick it apart, when it launches.
I would still love to see a fully realized version of this come out with the final release of OSMF and SMP 1.6 - (some of my tweaks/additions could probably use some extra polish, especially around touch devices, I only focused on iOS initially). A comment or feedback from someone at Adobe as to wether there will be an official update, or wether it will remain experimental and unfinished, would definitely be appreciated.

2. Re: SMP > Official HTML5 Support
Robert Hall Jul 20, 2011 6:20 AM (in response to Robert Hall)Quick followup - looking at the SVN for SMP on sourceforge, specifically here:
There have been a bunch of additional items surrounding mobile and embedding checked in within the last few days, but the changes to the jquery.strobemediaplaybackchrome.js and jquerystrobemediaplayback.js (the two main files for HTML5 support) haven't had any revisions checked in since March. The CSS skin file that goes with it was updated recently, but nothing major. Was hoping there would be more movement on this.
Perhaps they are waiting to check in changes to those items at a later day, (I have no idea if sourceforge is the master repository for this or not) or they simply aren't completed yet, but looks like there is some movement around tablets and devices (see the other html examples and JS) for SMP, but just not much movement around the HTML5 JS fallback "exploratory" code they introduced.

iheartvideo Jul 20, 2011 11:17 AM (in response to Robert Hall)The Strobe Media Playback 1.6 release will include an updated version of our HTML5 fallabck, so definitely check that out when it's released (end of August). SMP 1.6 will also include mobile optimized UIs for smartphones and tablets and a basic device detection library that can be extended with additional device profiles.
Sourceforge is our repository for all things OSMF, including SMP.
Thanks!

5. Re: SMP > Official HTML5 Support
greg•hamer Nov 9, 2011 3:34 PM (in response to iheartvideo)Just writing here to confirm what seems obvious ...
As of the final SMP 1.6 release, is HTML5 video now officially supported as a "first class" runtime by SMP?
"Yes" is what the following blog post regarding the SMP 1.6 release seems to imply:
Announcing OSMF and Strobe Media Playback 1.6
http://blogs.adobe.com/osmf/2011/09/announcing-osmf-and-strobe-media-playback-1-6.htmlThe blog post above having included a link to the following SMP wiki page:
HTML5 & JavaScript support for SMP
http://sourceforge.net/apps/mediawiki/osmf.adobe/index.php?title=HTML5_%26_JavaScript_supp ort_for_SMPI am seeking to confirm that HTML5 playback is a "first class" runtime for SMP given Adobe's commit to mobile runtimes for SMP, and the following recent Adobe announcement:
Flash to Focus on PC Browsing and Mobile Apps; Adobe to More Aggressively Contribute to HTML5
http://blogs.adobe.com/conversations/2011/11/flash-focus.htmlEXCERPT:
Our future work with Flash on mobile devices will be focused on enabling Flash developers to package native apps with Adobe AIR for all the major app stores. We will no longer continue to develop Flash Player in the browser to work with new mobile device configurations (chipset, browser, OS version, etc.) following the upcoming release of Flash Player 11.1 for Android and BlackBerry PlayBook. These changes will allow us to increase investment in HTML5 and innovate with Flash where it can have most impact for the industry, including advanced gaming and premium video. ...
Thank you again to all on the SMP team for the great player code base that you provide all who are delivering video to web and mobile devices.

6. Re: SMP > Official HTML5 Support
iheartvideo Nov 10, 2011 3:53 PM (in response to greg•hamer)That’s a bit of a tricky question. The HTML5 / JavaScript version of SMP does not provide the same functionality as the OSMF / Flash version of SMP. For example, with the former, there is no notion of plug-ins and video playback is completely offloaded to the browser. Therefore, if “support as a first-class citizen runtime” means parity with the Flash version, then the answer would have to be no, as parity would essentially be impossible.
However, I can say that Adobe is 100% committed to helping publishers distribute video to relevant devices, and extending SMP from desktop to mobile was the first step in that effort. HTML5 is clearly an important platform for publishers, and Adobe will continue to invest in HTML5.
Hopefully that answers your question?
I’d also encourage folks to check out this recent blog post on Adobe’s commitment to video:

Thanks!

7. Re: SMP > Official HTML5 Support
sesses3 Nov 18, 2011 3:59 AM (in response to iheartvideo)Given all the changes recently at Adobe, a more detailed commitment to the HTML5 part of SMP would be nice. Parity isn't going to happen, obviously, but given that HTML5 is now the only real option for mobile video, the HTML5 part is only going to increase in importance.
A promise to continue developing OSMF/Strobe in general would also be nice. I work for a broadcaster who's currently looking to migrate to OSMF/Strobe, but after the recent changes it's hard not to be nervous that Adobe will suddenly decide to stop development and leave us needing to migrate to yet another solution. The blog post above is rather light on specifics in this regard.
