Image With Transparency Results in Making All Text Faux Bold

I need help with InDesign. I have a document with text on it and a background graphic. Everytime I add a transparent image to the my page, all the text instantly changes to be thicker.

The process flow goes like this: I add a placeholder for an image. I place the image. As soon as I add transparency to the image, all the text on the page develops some sort of faux bold look to it. This look continues even when saved as a pdf.  As soon as I delete the image, all the text returns to how it should look. Pages without an image placed do not have the faux bold look, just the ones with images.
