detaching Master page items results in duplicates

Folks in my office are encounting a new problem with certain documents -- if we want to alter a Master Page item on a page, we do our usual command-shift-click to detach the item from the master. In the past, this would result in the item becoming editable. However now when we command-shift-click, InDesign makes a copy of the item, which it pastes on top of the Master Page item. There seems to be no way to edit or get rid of the Master Page item.

I've tried various possibilities on the Pages menu, for instance, selecting the page in question and 'Detach all objects from Master'. No help there.

Is the document corrupt or am I missing something?

I'm using InDesign CS5 for Mac. ver 7.0.3

      thanks in advance,
