Why is 'typical display' so bad in CS5?

I've just moved from CS3 to CS5 and 'typical display' mode (the only way to work with any speed on pages) is soooo low res. It's not just imported images... drop shadows are jagged and badly formed, imported vectors look like lego... Makes layouts really hard to judge without constantly flicking to high quality and sitting and waiting for 10 mins... not ideal in press week!!!

What the hell's going on? Is there a way to upgrade typical display to somewhere between where it is and high quality display?
