I have been using After Effects for a about year on and off so I am fairly new. I worked on a tutorial the other day that shows how to cast shadows. I got everything to work except the "virtual floor" to cast the shadow of my text on to is having an issue. I want the floor to be transparent but still accept the shadow. The tutorial said that if you turn the transfer mode to "multiply" it would become transparent. For them it did...for me it only becomes semi transparent however the shadow looks great but I want the rest of the layer to not be visible...Any thoughts. I am runing CS 5
Make sure the layer is perfectly white outside the shadow areas. If necessary, pre-compose and roll back the white and black points with a levels or curves adjustement...
That did it! Thank you very much!
Make sure that you have the material options for your shadow catcher layer set to Accepts Shadows: ON and Accepts Lights: Off
This will fix the transfer mode problem without the need to pre-compose or mess with levels.
