Good old 1998!
You could load the swf using SwfLoader and watch its enterFrame event. When the frame changes, you could fill a BitmapData with it like this: http://help.adobe.com/en_US/FlashPlatform/reference/actionscript/3/flash/display/Graphics. html#beginBitmapFill(). You could use that BitmapData in a Bitmap, which could then be used for the source of an Image.
Not sure if I should be upset or not by the 1998 comment...
Thanks for the direction I dont know if i fully grasp the required logic yet, but I will give it a go, if I succeed watch this space for the code... if not look out for my tears.
This isn't exactly what you are trying to do, but you can use a lot of the concepts from this example
http://flexdiary.blogspot.com/2009/12/riadventure-inspiration.html . Just replace the part where I rotated the symbol with one where you go to each frame and capture the pixels. You'll probably want to do the bitmap fill at that point, rather than just capturing the single copy I did. Once you have the linked list of data, you can use it as stated in a Bitmap for an Image source.
