Mylenium Jul 29, 2011 9:11 AM (in response to perfectblue)Copy&Paste the image as a layer opacity mask for the texture or use on of the color channels as same, then asjust the levels in the resulting mask. Similallry, you could just use the layer as a clipping mask...

perfectblue Jul 29, 2011 10:01 AM (in response to Mylenium)@Mylenium, Thanks for the reply. I think I followed your instructions incorrectly, specifically the layer opacity mask. I tried adjsuting the opacity % for the masked layer but that essentially behaved the same as adjusting the levels. I took some screenshots of what I did, and the problem of the grundge overlay lightening the metal.
Would it be possible to quickly edit the .PSD so I could precisley how you go about accomplishing this?
Thanks for any consideration -

Noel Carboni Jul 30, 2011 1:17 PM (in response to perfectblue)Overlay mode mixing expects values to be cenered around 127, 127, 127. Yours, in the Base Overlay area, are not.
One quick way to improve this is to use Filter - Other - High Pass on your Base Overlay layer. Some of the transitional areas (e.g., between the dark and light areas) might still need some hand touch-up so that they don't noticeably lighten nor darken your result.
