1. Re: How do I make a border or frame?
Bill Hunt Aug 1, 2011 3:07 PM (in response to talbot)There are several ways to accomplish this, and your choice will probably depend on what you have, and exactly what you wish to end up with.
One would be to set the color that you want for this "frame" and then just change the Canvas Size to what you need, leaving your "image" centered.
Variation on above: Set frame color, and Ctrl+N (New Image), choosing that color, and a size to provide you with the outside dimensions of the "frame." Then, just drag your image to the New Image. One good thing about this process is that you will now have two Layers, and if you convert your Background Layer to a regular Layer, you can do all sorts of stuff to it, from Textures, to tons of Filters. For many manipulations, you will not even need to convert the BackgroundLayer.
Not sure if they are in the latest release, but through CS2, there were Actions installed to create several "frame types."
In a moment you will get more ideas, like a Bordered Selection, that is Filled.
Good luck,
Hunt

talbot Aug 1, 2011 4:16 PM (in response to Bill Hunt)Thank-you for the tips Bill!
For convenience and the simple thing I'm doing right now with a solid color, the 2nd option seting the frame color will work just fine.

talbot Aug 1, 2011 4:19 PM (in response to Bill Hunt)Wow, you met the Greatest! Too bad Parkinsons has silenced a once voiceferous leader who I agreed with on many fronts.
I'll add this to my PS tips doc so I can refer to it when I need to really make a cool frame.

7. Re: How do I make a border or frame?
Bill Hunt Aug 1, 2011 5:27 PM (in response to talbot)Yes, The Champ has been mostly sidelined lately, but he has been very instrumental in research and treatment work. Though he has provided for many "legacies," perhaps his greatest, and most far reaching is the Muhammad Ali Parkinson Center, a department of St. Joseph's Hospital and the Barrow Neurological Institute. Besides his name, and his wealth, he and his lovely wife, Lonnie, have worked tirelessly, and at many levels to expand both the research and the treatment. In Muhammad's case, it would be more correct to refer to his condition as "Parkinsons-like," as there are differences. Still, that has not stopped his continued support. We spend quite a bit of time with both Muhammad and Lonnie through the Barrow, and due to weather, they now spend most of their time in Phoenix, so we see a bit more of them. It has greatly saddened me to see the decline, but the mind, and the spirit are still there - just slightly below the "surface." He has touched so many, and on so many levels. We attended an event recently, where Billy Crystal did a wonderful tribute to Muhammad, who was in the front row. Great evening!
Now, back to our regularly scheduled program... As you can see, Photoshop offers many ways to do the same, or similar things. There is seldom a right, or a wrong, just ones that might suit your workflow better. I probably overlooked a half-dozen more in the process, but then my mind is slowing down, and I forget things more easily.
For a recent video "slideshow" presentation, I relied on a variation of that Action to do about 300 Images. However, I have also created more intricate "frames," and then just did a Selection for the "picture area of the frame" that was automatically added as a Layer Mask to Images brought in as Layers, for another video slideshow. It all just depends on what one needs or wants.
Glad to have come up with one useful solution for you, and on my first guess...
Happy editing,
Hunt

Bill Hunt Aug 1, 2011 5:28 PM (in response to JJMack)Nice animation, and that does show some of the power of simple Actions. Well done.
Thanks,

9. Re: How do I make a border or frame?
talbot Aug 1, 2011 6:47 PM (in response to Bill Hunt)Thanks for the info. It must be really special being in his presense. My grandmother died of Parkinsons in the early 60's when I was around 10 so I do not know exactly what she had and really don't know that much about it except that my grandfather would tie her leg to the bed post to help control the shaking. I do know it can be hereditary and so far my 3 younger brothers (48 is youngest and 2 no longer living) and I have no symptons so fingers crossed.
Yes, very true, whatever is in your comfort zone. I don't do a lot of graphic work but like to step in when there's a void. I just did this graphic with the frame - I did a cut and paste thing to create it since I already 'had' one before I got a response. But I have to re-do it because I don't like how the text looks (pixelated/zagged). Someone told me how to do it in Illustrator but I don't remember but it was something about rasterizing. I am going to create a new separate post.
Thanks again for your help
