Ideally I would like to write and debug the InDesign script from Microsogt's VBA IDE as I am fairly familiar with VBA.

Sure. I did that years ago to copy stuff between Word & InDesign.
Using Word it's no more difficult than adding the InDesign Type Library to VBA (in the Tools menu). Then you can invoke InDesign with some magic sequence (see the Visual Basic Scripting Guide for that), and browse its objects with the Object Browser.
I'd say look at Adobe's own documentation first.

I'm going to start by using the VBA dev environment (because I'm famililar with it) and later I'll download the VB5 CCE to further develop the VBScripts once I get going with InDesign scripts.
