    Export adds 200MB to a 13MB clip

    bgrenham

      Greetings,

Unfortunately I have run into a bit of an issue when exporting from CS5.

I have trimmed about 10 seconds off a small 14MB Quicktime clip and when I export, as a Quicktime file, it comes out as more than 200MB.

Am I doing something wrong?  I have completed the same, seemingly, quick and easy process in iMovie and it does not add hundreds of MB's.

Seems like I shouldnt have to compromise the quality of such a small clip by adjusting settings when my only intention is to shorten it (make it even smaller).

      Any help would be appreciated!

      Cheers,

      Billy

What's your input codec? What's your output codec? What's your input bitrate? What's your output bitrate?

Thanks for the reply -- here's what I got.

Unfortunately, that doesn't really help. Grab MediaInfo and run a report on both your source file and your exported file; if you use Text mode, you can copy and paste the results of each here.

That's odd. If you have any other items on the same sequence timeline, make sure that you are exporting only the work area, not the entire sequence. Look at the bottom of the Export Settings panel: Source Range.  I've been bitten by that occasionally.

Thanks for the tip but unfortunately "work area" was already selected.

Will definitely keep an eye out for that in the future!

Well, you're going from an H.264 encoded clip at about 1.5 Mbps to a DV encoded clip at about 25 Mbps; should be pretty clear as to why the file is larger.

If you have to go back to H.264, either use QuickTime H.264 or H.264 MP4, and set your bitrate (the biggest determinant of filesize) accordingly. Note that since you're going from a highly-compressed source file back to a highly-compressed destination, you'll incur some quality loss. You can match your encoding parameters to the source parameters as reported by Mediainfo.

Thanks for all the info Colin.  I am still trying to find the right combo to keep the quality from taking a noticable hit.

I might just use iMovie for minor edits like this.

                        Thanks again!

iMovie might do "smart encoding" from H.264 QuickTime clips, meaning that it won't re-encode the whole file if it doesn't have to. Premiere Pro doesn't work like this, unfortunately, so you might be better off sticking with iMovie for such things. As far as actual editing capabilities, of course, Premiere Pro steals iMovie's lunch money
