How are you playing/previewing the composition?
I used the "Import" option to bring the file into After Effects then when it appeared in the "Project" pane I double clicked the file name, this opens up the video in the "Footage" pane where it plays in slow motion when I play it using the play button in the "Preview" pane.
After making my original post in this topic I tested an unedited sample wmv file that was part of the Windows 7 intall and it does the same slow motion. This is a 29.97 fps wmv file that was shipped with Windows 7 by microsoft as a sample video and it also runs in slow motion in After Effects.
'Play' button does not always provide you with real time playback (and you actually see that note in your case).
Use 'RAM Preview' (extreme right button in 'Preview' panel) instead.
As Fuzzy Barsik says, you don't get real-time playback with the spacebar (which is the same as the Play button). For real-time playback, you use RAM preview.
Based on this and a few other questions that you've asked recently, I think that it would be a good idea if you spent some time working your way through the basic learning materials for After Effects before you go any further. After Effects is not a program that you can just jump into the middle of and try to use intuitively. If you don't get a grounding in the basics first, you will be frustrated.
Thank you for your replies and your patience with my questions.
You are right, I need to get a bit of a grounding and read up on these programs a bit rather than try to intuitively navigate my way around AE and Premiere Pro. I come from the world of data analysis usings databases and spreadsheets so this is all new to me. I will try to have have a read up on a few tutorials before I return with more questions.

Please start with the materials that I pointed to. I say that because over the past several years, I've seen a lot of, um, garbage that passes for tutorials for After Effects. I've collected the above resources as the best for a person getting started.
