3. Re: ae cs5 importing seq images all blacked out or only one frame - help
Rick Gerard Aug 13, 2011 3:27 PM (in response to l1o1t1r1)First, make sure that the color space isn't CMYK.
Second, if you can, post one of the frames so we can take a look.
My guess is that it's the PNG's problem and not AE's.
You'll probably also want to avoid very long file names and spaces. IOW a file name of walkCycle_0001.png is much better than a file name of Walk Cycle 0001.png
Also, don't use any punctuation except a dash or underscore in your file names.

4. Re: ae cs5 importing seq images all blacked out or only one frame - help
l1o1t1r1 Aug 13, 2011 3:38 PM (in response to l1o1t1r1)Rick I went over some of the png files in ps cs5 they open with a transparent background I did notice that they where grayscale instead of rgbs. Does that make a differeance?
Thanks for the naming seq tip.
I used media encoder to get the pngs
Then ps cs5 to elimate the white background and it is here that the pngs where turned to grayscale.

TimeRemapper Aug 13, 2011 3:50 PM (in response to l1o1t1r1)Yup, convert them to RGB. You can create an action or batch it in Photoshop pretty easily.

Rick Gerard Aug 13, 2011 4:01 PM (in response to l1o1t1r1)Can you post one of the png's. Just drop it in here using the camera icon at the top of the posting window.
If you import one PNG into AE, instead of the entire sequence, does it come in properly? RGB or Gray Scale should work equally well. I'm wondering what the original source was if you needed Media Encoder to generate the PNG sequence.

Rick Gerard Aug 13, 2011 4:35 PM (in response to l1o1t1r1)This tells me there's something wrong with your png conversion. Still like to see a png. Just a single png.

14. Re: ae cs5 importing seq images all blacked out or only one frame - help
Rick Gerard Aug 13, 2011 5:04 PM (in response to l1o1t1r1)Here's the image converted to RGB. Notice how your original was black in the browser. Also notice that there's a bunch of non transparent pixels.
I'd set up a batch action in Photoshop change the image to rgb and see if that helps. I don't know what the best approach would be to clean up the drawing. It may help if I saw a frame from the original.

The lose pixels (non -transparent pixels) doesn't matter from these basic uncleaned walk cycle. What does matter is that they play in ae cs5 so to see how the walk cycle is working with the background. I'll try the rgb converstion as TimeRemapper posted.

17. Re: ae cs5 importing seq images all blacked out or only one frame - help
l1o1t1r1 Aug 13, 2011 5:41 PM (in response to l1o1t1r1)I just ran a batch action in ps cs5 to convert grayscale to rgb I then imported the walk cycle seq into ae cs5 and all frames imported when scrubing i can now see the walk cycle over the background.
So, grayscale pngs creates a problem for ae cs5 - note: be sure to save the walk cycles as rgbs. Another note: when scaning in hand drawn walk cycles scan in as color rgb mode not grayscale mode.

18. Re: ae cs5 importing seq images all blacked out or only one frame - help
Rick Gerard Aug 13, 2011 8:49 PM (in response to l1o1t1r1)I just did some tests. If you export the png's using the save for web and other devices and png 24 then things work fine with grayscale images. If you save grayscale images as png's directly then the png's are aparently saved as png 8's so they won't work properly in After Effects. Any pixel not completely white is rendered black.
To be honest I've never run into this before. It may be worthy of a bug report.
I'm not sure what technique you're using to remove the background from the originals but a jpg made from the original png file can be used as an Luma Inverted matte on a black solid to create the transparency. A little adjustment to the jpg sequence with levels will clean up most of the garbage. This would give you an acceptable result without resorting to a bunch of processing to try and create transparent pngs.
