    CS3-Trouble with Transferred Trimmed Project

    pcford Community Member

      Hello...

New problem; have not been able to find answer.

I need to cut a 20 minute SD video down to 10 minutes to share at a retreat for documentary filmmakers. The last interation of the video was on my editor's machine. Saved a trimmed project without previews to an external drive and then transferred the project to my computer.

The problem is that when I do changes, the renders are glacial. I timed one...2.5 minutes for 50 frames...and there was nothing fancy going on. When I save the project and reopen it, it shows rendering is needed again...some areas required rendering which were not changed.

Premiere seems to handle other projects ok. Crazy making...there is obviously something I do not understand about working with trimmed projects. My editor has a much newer and more powerful computer, but is running CS3 as well. (Running Win7.)

The computer is long in the tooth...but has always been fine in the past...and is fine with other projects. What's up? I know I need a new computer but this one should be able to handle this.

      Thanks in advance!

          Update:

Premiere is loading very, very slowly this morning. In fact, have not been able to load a project. Photoshop seems to load ok. Other programs seem to load ok.

I am going to take the Premiere project that was giving my problems and load it on my work computer...same version Premiere. More or less the same cpu speed.

Now running a AV scan, nothing out of the ordinary so far. (found a cookie.)

If the project loads ok on work computer, should I reinstall Premiere?

As you are Moving that archived Project around, can you tell us the full details, say the archived Project is on an external, what is the connection type of that external, and what is the HDD's speed?

If you are using an external, but are then Copying the archived Project, complete with Trimmed Assets to the internal HDD of the new (new to the Project, and not "new" in terms of date of purchase) computer, what are the full details of that internal HDD, and what is the full setup of the HDD's on that new computer?

On the new computer, where are the Scratch Disks set in Edit>Preferences? Can you furnish the details of that location?

            Good luck,

Bill...good to have you answering a question again...I loaded the trimmed project onto my work computer and the same thing is happening. Here are details of the video hard drive on _this_ machine.

              Brand Western Digital
              Series Caviar Black
              Model WD1001FALS
              Interface SATA 3.0Gb/s
              Capacity 1TB
              RPM 7200 RPM
              Cache32MB

Scratch disc is set to same as project.

Premiere is working fine on other projects. It must be something screwed up in the trimmed project. I trimmed it for conveniece, of course...the entire project is many times as large. The problem on both machines is that rendering is normal at first then gradually slows down to a glacial rate. This occurs on both machines. On the home machine, the renders fail if the project is reloaded...you have to rerender...

Am relunctant to copy the entire project but I may have to.

Am going to check with editor to see if he has the project on his hard drive or just on this external which I have. If he has the project I will ask him to open the project to check for problems.

              Thanks for any inspiration. pcf

Thank you for that info. Sounds like things should work just fine.

The "lost Renders" often happens when one is using an external HDD to edit to/from, or a networked drive, but this does not seem to be your issue.

When I archive a Project (usually TO and external HDD), I will test that Project, prior to moving on. I have yet to encounter any issues, so long as my Assets are in the Project's folder hierarchy. I have run into issues, with Assets not being gathered, when the Assets are spread about. I encountered this with some SmartSound files, that were in a separate folder, since they were being used in about 22 separate Projects for that client. I learned to Copy those into the Project's folder structure, into Music sub-folders, even if that meant having 22 Copies on my system. That has been the ONLY issue, that I have had with archived Projects, using Project Manager, but do have to admit that other than my initial test, I have not revisited many over the years. Do not have any idea why the Render files are causing an issue, and also why the Projects are slowing down, as they are.

Hope that others will see what I am missing, and will have tips for you.

                Good luck,

                  Thanks, Bill.

Will go over to my editor's place tonight and see how the trimmed version works on his computer....worst case scenario, I collect and copy all files...unfortunately that's 90gig versus 5 for trimmed, but I think I have room on external and on my video drive.

Thanks for looking at the problem....

                      Hi Bill and others...

                      Hokay...making progress...

One thing I did not add is that when we copied the files in Trim mode in Project Manager, I elected to not copy preview files.

Back to our story. I went to my editor's place after work. We copied the project over to his machine and opened it. For about half of the time bar progress was normal. Then it went progressively slowly...basically the same as my machine though Mike's machine is faster. We aborted the operation and did a Collect files and Copy in Project Manager. We checked save preview files this time.

It took a while to copy: 56 gig versus 5.5 in the trimmed version. I took it to my machine and it played fine...

Don't know what to conclude but there you are...I guess use trimmed version at your peril.

                      Thanks...
