There is an update in the works. Whether it will be delivered as a patch to 11.5 or a completely new version, and when, is unknown by anyone outside Adobe.
today i got Hotfix 3 220.127.116.119
but kannot find any information what is fixed
There seems to be some new stuff, mainly concerning textures and shaders:
texture[whichtexture].updateRTImageOnRender (render to texture???)
shaderObjectRef.textureCoordGenMode (bump or displacement mapping???)
shaderObjectRef.alphaSort (z-sort transparent shader by pixel???)
shaderObjectRef.parallaxHeight (parallax mapping attribute???)
shaderObjectRef.lightExclusionList (self explanatory???)
It would be nice if Adobe added the new stuff to the help documentation. But, then again, what fun would that be?
Yes. This update is mostly 3d related, adding quite a few nice new features that will help to bring shockwave 3d into the 2000's. A little late, but it is nice to see that they are actually serious about their statements that they want to make Director a proper tool for realtime 3d production. I'm surprised that they have not yet released the updated documentation, but rest assured that new docs are forthcoming. And they are very good.
The new 3d features, I believe, are:
Parallax mapping (with texture transform)
Normal mapping (with texture transform)
Abilty to import Collada models into DIrecotr in authoring (not projector)
Also, there are some fixes for embedded fonts most of the shockwave crashing problems that people have been seeing recently.
And the Flash xtra has been updated to support a newer version of Flash player (10.2) and some fixes that address other shockwave crashes
Mac projectors can now be published as Intel-only for those who are targetting only modern non-PPC Macs.
And some other extraneous bugfixes.
Thanks for another informative post Mike-
I hope that, now that we can create intel binary stuff, we will be able to submit apps to the Mac App Store
Are you saying that Mac apps can be written in Director?
The apps need to be code signed and Intel binary to be accepted by Apple to be sold in the Mac App Store.
Yes. You can author an app in Director and get it into the app store. You will need a third party program to bundle it up and sign it, though, like the free Platypus. Instructions are here (though you no longer need to "TrimTheFat" since you can use Director to publish an Intel only program):
Do you know of any Director authored game on the app store? Is Platypus authored in Director?
Not off the top of my head. I have heard of people successfully doing it though. And Platypus has nothing to do with Director per se, it is just a program that allows you to buncdle a bunch of files up and code sign them in a way that the App Store will accept. It was certainly not made in Director, but if can be used for Director applications as well as those authored in other programs.
I thought you were referring to Platypus the game. That is very cool by the way. Thanks!
I update Director Hotfix 3 11.5.9.
Flash Text box(Classic text engine) Cursor disappear.
Well, some of the new stuff has appeared in the docs. As far as I can tell there is no "What's New In 11.5.9" page, which is a bit of a shortcoming in my opinion. Here are a few links:
image (Render to Texture):
The Render to Texture stuff seems ideal for creating shadows and reflections. There's currently nothing about textureCoordGenMode, which I would guess is for bump and parallax mapping.
Does anybody have any idea why my 11.5.8 Director doesn't find this update? Trying "Help->Updates". It only runs Adobe Updater and doesn't find anything. And I cannot even add Director to the Updater list. Where am I supposed to do the update from?
The font embedding problem under OSX Lion appears to be fixed - yay.
However, they've done something that's rendered all of my embedded SWF FLV players defunct! (argh!). OK-OK, so they're old AS2-based things that I've carried over from the days of MX2004 [wipes a nostalgic tear from his eyes], but they worked just fine in Director 11.5.8 and are screwed in 11.5.9.
I'm guessing that rewriting the players in AS3 may get them working again... anyone want to tell me that I'm right/wrong before I spend hours on it only to uncover yet another suite entertaining bugs?
[sigh] I love Director so much - how have they managed to screw it over so badly? I couldn't care less about the new 3D features, and neither I suspect could the majority of the Director developer community. We need the basics that used to work a treat - font embedding, wide-ranging media support, massive library of Xtras, etc. etc. - to be fixed before they go messing on with the largely pointless (and in my experience very unstable) 3D engine... I mean, how many 3D modelling apps can actually create Shockwave 3D content? So what's the blumin point?!
What will it take to get Adobe to "fish or cut bait" with Director? At least if they chose to ditch it (rather than slowly stangle it to death as they are currently) then another developer could step-in, buy the source, and nurture this wonderful program back to full health.
It wouldn't be so bad if there were a realistic alternative, but I'm yet to find one :-(
Trying "Help->Updates". It only runs Adobe Updater and doesn't find anything.
That's all I did and it updated fine. Are you sure it didn't update in the background a few days ago perhaps? Type put the productVersion in Director's message panel and hit [return] - if you get "11.5.9" then the update is there. If not then I wonder if uninstalling and reinstalling Director would make the Adobe Updater recognise its presence?
Had checked the productVersion already and it's still 11.5.8. So the updater should recognise it, maybe it's time to reinstall it then, doesn't sound fun thought... Well, I think I need the font embedding on Lion too, so gotta do.
Forgot to thank Thanks!
Ok, got it working. I just installed the Director over the old installation and this made Director to crash. But after that I could run the Adobe Updater and it found Director, updated and after that everything worked like charm. Thanks for the idea!
