Darrel Plant has written an importer for .ai and .eps files. You can get
Haven't used it for a while but it works pretty good.
Downside is that it creates multiple members because Director can't
(couldn't?) handle multiple-line vector members.

Thanks for the link - one question - if this xtra breaks up the file into individual cast members, how do you then print the original combined drawing?
Mmm, probably haven't read your post good enough...
You want to print castmembers? Can you composite one bitmap from the
vector members? Don't remember how well they apply their transparency if
you fiddle around with their image property.
a quick test seems to work out OK:
i = image(member(1).width, member(1).height, 32)
i.fill(member(1).rect, color(255, 0, 0))
i.copyPixels(member(1).image, member(1).rect, i.rect)
b = new(#bitmap)
b.image = i
