ExternalInterface with swf in other folder than the html file

I have a website in which swf and html files reside in different folders, like this:

The example.swf is placed in the example.html file and referenced as ../flash/example.swf.
Now I want to communicate through javascript with the swf, using Flash's ExternalInterface class. But it works only from swf to html and not vice versa. The parameter 'allowScriptAccess' is set to 'always'. Can somebody explain why this doesn't work in the way that it does when both files are in the same folder?
