I also just installed v. 10.1. I didn't find a complete fix, but you can set it so that when you reopen a document, it retains your view settings, including not having the navigation bar buttons on the left. Go to Edit > Preferences > Documents, and select Restore last view settings when reopening documents. The problem is, this only works with reopened documents, not with newly opened ones. (It does work even with files that are no longer on the recently used files list.) But if you use the same ones a lot, it might be somewhat helpful.
Yeah I already found that option, but that isn't a solution for me.
I work with a lot of invoices for example, and it's a new one everytime.
So not opening the same PDF file each time.
