How are the numbers put into pos tion now? Is each line a paragraph, or is this running text? Forced line breaks if not paragragh breaks?
I am working in InDesign CS3.
Each Line is a paragraph. I have used Shift Tab to right aligh the Line Numbers.
Excellent I was just about to ask.
Seems to work for me
If it's doable, I think it would need a script. It is doable to remove the numbers using GREP, though. Find ~y\d+$ and leave the change to field blank. That will set you up for an alternate plan.
Harbs wrote a script that might help you. It along with one from Ariel (in the comments) are discussed at http://indesignsecrets.com/quickly-add-line-numbers-with-this-free-script.php
I haven't used it and don't know if the postioning can be changed. I also don't know if there is a way to skip lines, but I imagine it is possible to modify the script so that any numbers not divisible by 5 could be assigned a fill color of [None].
Eugene seems to be more clever than I am this morning. Note that this will work ONLY for the specific case of moving the number down one line.
The generalist in me still thinks settng up for a scripted numbering solution is probably a better long-term plan and more versatile for future editing.
Well they asked for one line, so I persume for more than one line they can redo the grep as many times as they like.
I'm only cleverer this morning because it's actually 2.00 p.m. here and I've lots of coffee.

See, there you go being clever again. It's mid morning here and I've yet to wake up.
